    Reimagining Amtrak stations

I can see why Amtrak would be loath to mention it, but why everyone else? I'm talking elimination of baggage service, a very important feature for LD travelers, at least for me. The internet is great for a lot of things, but not checking baggage.

    Reimagining Amtrak stations

So what happened to the agents from the closed stations? or those lower on the ladder who got bumped?

Amtrak 3 & 4 affected by BNSF train collision in AZ (6/5/18)

Oops, another one. The Quincy Herald-Whig reported six double stacks hit the ground on 6/9 south of Medill, MO, which appears to be on the SWC route.

Amtrak 3 & 4 affected by BNSF train collision in AZ (6/5/18)

Is BNSF the new CSX? That's 3 in the last few weeks: Aurora, Ottumwa, and now AZ. Or is it just the case of rolling 10 tails in a row?

    Eastbound CL Timing (schedule change?)

I couldn't find the station code HOU, but sure enough trying HOS (Houston) to PGH departing July 26 shows the CL departing the next day from CHI at 6:10 and arriving at PGH at 4:35AM. Trying CHi to PGH departing on July 27 shows the CL departing the next day from CHI at 6:40 and arriving at PGH...

Fort Madison and Mount Pleasant Iowa - Ticket agents and baggage.

Consulting the Staffed to Unstaffed Stations Master Thread, Newton appears to have been spared. However, I'm almost certain it was one of the 5 days per week plus self check on the days the agent was not on duty. Regarding volunteers and baggage service, we don't even need to make a...

Fort Madison and Mount Pleasant Iowa - Ticket agents and baggage.

FMD and MTP are two of my go-to stations, so I found this particularly obnoxious. What is odd is that both FMD and MTP had only a five day-a-week agent and self check baggage on week ends. So it looks like FMD, but not MTP has lost self check. I just came back from a FMD to LMY trip; and can...

Cash Free On-Board - Open Discussion

I wouldn't state it in the same way, but I agree with you entirely. Employee steeling is Amtrak's problem. Although I use the credit card where ever possible (for the points), there is nothing illegal, immoral, unethical, or politically incorrect about using cash.

    Lamy to Denver Connection

OP here. I can't give a definite answer because the SWC was only a couple minutes late. I did ask the driver and he said the bus would wait one hour. The odd thing is that it does pick up passenger in Pueblo and Colorado Springs. When I mentioned to the driver that the hound website that...

Derailment (5/27) on the BNSF Ottumwa Sub. CZ likely to be affected.

I'm note sure I understand. 5 after Omaha would be well west of the derailment. If the issue is getting back on track after KC, there is a BNSF line between KC and the normal line at Pacific Junction, IA. If the issue is subsequent 5's, then there is the UP line across Iowa, but that would be...

Care to help a girl out? (newbie questions)

As an example over 7 days in early June, coach from San Jose to Emeryville and roomette from EMY to CHI for one person ranges from $504 to $955 AS OF RIGHT NOW. I should note that the Capitol Corridor train that connects with the Zephyr only runs on week days. On weekends, on a bus connection...

    Business class on today's (5/19) #350

The OP mentioned departing Chicago. He didn't mention his destination; so it could have been 448. Buy I suspect it was also "state funded", whatever that means. it could be Illinois, Michigan, or Indiana.

Amtrak's New "Fresh Choices" Dining on CL & LSL

Assuming your representatives don't represent NEC states, their response should be: no LD, no NEC (subsidy). After all, take away LD trains and that leaves only the NEC, since by law other corridors are the responsibility of the states. NEC trains claim to make money "over the rails". But I...

Amtrak's New "Fresh Choices" Dining on CL & LSL

I really don't want to wade through the 800 odd post to see if this has already been discussed. I presume serving those who want to eat in their room will work much like it does now. But what will be the procedure if you want to eat in in the sleeper only lounge? Line up at a counter to...

    Lamy to Denver Connection

I'm booked on the eastbound SWC from LMY to Raton, connecting to Thruway bus 8604 to Denver. The scheduled layover is only 15 minutes: 4:50PM to 5:05. The ticket says the bus is operated by Greyhound; and there is regularly scheduled Greyhound running only from Raton to Denver on the same...

Incompetence in Amtrak automated message hurting LSL customers.

If you try to book CHI to ALB, only 448 show up. So I presume 48 isn't going anywhere, including BOS. So certainly the car number on his reservation will change, and most likely the room number as well.

    Penalty for a reservation change

Isn't there still a time limit? Possibly a week prior to departure? I recently changed a sleeper reservation date. The price was the same and there was no fee. But this was done a month before departure.

Staffed to Unstaffed Stations Master Thread

Would this be in addition to eliminating existing baggage lite service? Fort Madison (FMD) has had track side baggage service for several years on weekends when it is not staffed. When I went to book FMD to LMY May 19 (a Saturday), it said no baggage. So why didn't they do this review before...

More Staffed Stations Bite the Dust on the Texas Eagle Route!!

So has he don't some market research on this? I'm sure very few people could move with only two bags, the homeless maybe.

CZ price drop for July 3. Saved $114!

So has it been established that sleepers are on the front this summer? I distinctly remember boarding 533 from gravel at the tail end of the train a couple summers ago.
