Heartland Flyer Consist Questions (Non-Pandemic Times)

I have no idea what that "Security Check Required" is all about or even means. I tried to include the Facebook links to Passenger Rail Kansas, Passenger Rail Oklahoma, and Southwest Chief Magazine.

Heartland Flyer Consist Questions (Non-Pandemic Times)

Actually, it's Passenger Rail Kansas Security Check Required, and Passenger Rail Oklahoma Security Check Required that are doing the most effective outreach and lobbying for extending the Heartland Flyer north to Newton. Also this Facebook page should be of interest: Security Check Required

How reliable is Air Conditioning in Bedroom cars

Can what's called Gaffer tape be found at typical hardware stores. Or are there some specialty online sources? And to prevent buying cheap knock-offs are there some recommended brands?

    Incident in La Plata

By the way, it was nothing at all to do with face masks. The train was in La Plata for 46 minutes because of this. It arrived just a few minutes late at 7:43pm and left LaPlata at 8:29pm.

    Incident in La Plata

Here's a preliminary news story - not a lot of details. At this point more details can be found on the Facebook pages Friends of the Southwest Chief and Friends of Laplata Amtrak,. https://ktvo.com/news/local/california-man-arrested-in-la-plata-for-assualting-amtrak-conductor

    Incident in La Plata

I did see the live video on the Virtual Rail Cam two nights ago, but is there a way to go back and view the video again - or to send it to those who missed it? I'm certainly not savvy enough to know how to do it. And then, once the video is found (that is, if it's possible to find it) can the...

    Train Host/Station Host

Amtrak could most probably operate more efficiently without the constraints of labor union contracts. I simply don't see any virtue in having labor unions mandate work rules (that's management's job) and artificial wage rates, not to mention making it difficult to fire malingerers and those...

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak Food Service Discussion

It would really help if dining car food servers were not unionized; why on earth should Amtrak pay the artificial wage rates for union labor; I don't think other restaurants have to contend with labor unions for their food servers. In most of the restaurant world, servers learn very quickly...

Amtrak restores staffing positions at Marshall station

This is certainly good news in getting station agents back, but, depending on train schedules to cover seven days a week at a station with just two trains a day, two part times would probably be adequate. There could be stations where forty-hour-a-week full timers would not be necessary. And...

How do feel about riding "Coach" ?

Does anyone know why sleepers were taken off #66 and #67?

How do feel about riding "Coach" ?

For all the very good reason listed above I do prefer sleepers. And of course I would prefer them even more if they brought back full dining service on all LD trains, local newspapers (or the Wall Street Journal but not USA Today), brought back ice buckets and the three kinds of fruit juices...

    Amtrak to Iowa City?

Would anyone here know if in the pre-Amtrak days did each private railroad that served the Quad Cities stop both on the Iowa side of the metro, and the Illinois side, to effectively serve the entire Quad Citie area? (And I've always wondered about another thing; of these five cities -...

Southwest Chief News & Future Operations

I don't know if this was mentioned much earlier in this thread but I'm wondering if this would be way to expedite service for now on the south portion of the Front Range to include Pueblo to Trinidad (with perhaps a stop at Walsenburg) by, not with a stub, but by actually routing the SW Chief...

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

I certainly hope conductor me_little_me reports that atrocious customer service experience to Amtrak!

    What would you add?

I wouldn't mind seeing Denver to Kansas City; in my case a stop in Salina would be just 65 miles for me. OK - let's stretch the route from Denver through Kansas City, to St. Louis, all the way to Nashville. The front range of the Rockies has already been addressed. Maybe Kansas City to Omaha...

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

Maybe I missed it, but does anyone know the Havre source of the Big Sky chicken dinners. (I'm sure I'm not the first to think of this but if we knew who prepared the meals, maybe passengers could arranged to call ahead, and arrange for delivery to the Amtrak station.)

Chief #3 (passengers instructed to leave SSL after Fullerton)

One solution would be to eliminate labor unions for customer service people on Amtrak trains. The idea is to provide the best possible customer service, not to worry about work rules and contract provisions from a third party. The only two important parties are Amtrak and their paying...

    Amtrak online ticketing

I have always booked Amtrak tickets over the phone with an agent. Are the fares less expensive by booking online? In any event, I don't really understand how the booking process works with the Amtrak website. At least it doesn't seem to be working for me. Can someone post step-by-step...

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

I'm sure the letter above written by young Cody about the reduction in amenities for Amtrak long-distance trains is one I whole heartily agree with but I'll admit I didn't read the entire letter. And perhaps it can be made even more effective and to the point. Now, I will admit my bias for...

    Tipping

As Cirdan noted above it does seem that it's not that unusual to come across a dining car server who seems to be less than enthusiastic in trying to please customers. And, at least in my experience, in the non-train restaurant world I rarely come across a server with an attitude problem...
