Long term parking at Kansas stations TOP or LRC

I believe Amtrak lists 25 long term parking spaces at the Topeka station, and 15 at the Lawrence station. https://www.amtrak.com/stations/top I don't if they offer shuttle service or not but the Topeka Ramada Inn is almost next door, and within walking distance, to the Amtrak station.

    Hotel near Chicago Union Station

I've always found reasonable rates - and clean and comfortable rooms - at the Club Quarters, 111 West Adams at Clark, which is, I believe, one of the closest hotels to Union Station. Great restaurant adjacent too - the Elephant and Castle Pub & Restaurant.. Don't know for sure, but it...

Drugs moving by Amtrak - Southwest Chief? Texas Eagle?

I may be a bit behind on this because the story below is for a sentencing of a previously reported crime, but do we have any idea of the identity of the Amtrak insider who facilitated the drug-running, what his position was, and what train was involved...

Dining car food service (requirement to show profit?)

I understand there is a either a law, or a regulatory ruling, mandating that dining car food service on Amtrak trains show a profit. This may have been covered in previous posts sometime back, but can anyone here tell us specifically what law or regulation it is?

    Where's Julie?

But the quality of her voice - and her smooth delivery and diction - and the smile in her voice - does indeed make me wonder if she also works as a commercial voice-over announcer, or perhaps as a local on-air radio personality somewhere.

If CZ #6 late into Chicago and miss CONO #59 questions

There may be times when you would want to schedule a night in Chicago anyway just to make sure you avoid the possibility of connection problems (and to make sure your overnight accommodations are pleasant and convenient). Of course there are many hotels in downtown Chicago, but a full...

    Where's Julie?

Would you believe that I tried to compliment Julie on her great voice awhile back but before she could arrange to buy me a drink to thank me, a customer service rep came on the line, interrupting her.

    Experience on the "Nightowl" Trains?

How long has it been since the overnight northeast regionals have had sleeper service, and is anyone aware of any future plans to add them back? Was there a demand for them?

    Amtrak to passengers: Keep Out!!

PVD and jis probably make some legitimate points, and I probably should have asked a different, specific question, and that is, why is it apparently so difficult to fire Amtrak employees with surly attitudes? I rarely, if ever, encounter customer service employees with negative attitudes in...

    Amtrak to passengers: Keep Out!!

So, it it mainly union work rules that contribute to this unfriendly customer attitude? (And do the really conscientious, enthusiastic, and eager-to-please customer service workers with magnetic personalities need labor unions anyway? Do the unions try to teach their members people skills...

    Late night/early morning arrivals

One small town I'm familiar with is Newton, KS on the Southwest Chief route. Both the east and westbound trains arrive and depart (when they're on time) between 2:45 and 3:00 a.m. The town has a small taxicab service (I don't know anything about Uber) and with advance reservations they can...

    Albuquerque hotels

    Thank you, Sarah Z!

    Albuquerque hotels

Just for a dose of overnight train travel after a bit of a dry spell I'm thinking of taking the SW Chief west to Albuquerque from Kansas and back again after a day or so. For overnight accommodations I usually try to find unique historical hotels that have some individual character and charm...

    Reimagining Amtrak stations

If some form of franchising or contract labor could reduce - and perhaps eventually eliminate - labor union influence with Amtrak that would have to be good. Not sure how much of Amtrak's expenses go to labor, but I think with another quasi-government organization, the U.S. Postal Service, it's...

Fort Madison and Mount Pleasant Iowa - Ticket agents and baggage.

I believe Newton, KS (Wichita) has full baggage service (at least it did the last time I boarded the SW Chief there last year). And I think their baggage service (and ticketing service) is seven days a week. And, actually, I think, in general, if Amtrak could get rid of their labor union...

Early morning departures from other cities?

OK - now if anyone is boarding the Southwest Chief in Newton (Wichita) here's an idea that may not be available in other Amtrak towns. Both SWCs are scheduled into Newton shortly before 3 a.m. In my case, I begin tracking the progress of the trains before I turn out the lights in my hotel...

Advice please, 30th St. or Washington DC

I understand you're trying to avoid exorbitant hotel rates, but like you I came into DC in a sleeper on the Cardinal and wanted to wait until the next day to continue on to Lancaster. But I had found what I considered a reasonable rate at the Phoenix Part Hotel right across from Union...

    Refreshments for Sleeper Car passengers

What on earth was the rationale for eliminating ice for the juice (and there were three kinds of juice - orange, apple, and cranberry)? For YEARS there was a plastic ice bucket of ice near the coffee/juice station in the middle of the sleeper. It seemed to work for everybody? Did some...

Planning a LSL Trip - Recommendations Appreciated

Two questions regarding this thread; it's been years since I've been on a Viewliner Sleeper (most all my trips are on Superliners) and I guess I've forgotten, but are there no showers on Viewliner sleepers whatsoever, and no restrooms outside of the roomettes? Regarding dining, I certainly...

Emeryville Amtrak Station Robbery / Shooting

Is the Emeryville area in general considered a high crime area? I've certainly heard that Oakland is, and my one experience at Amtrak Emveryville was a bit disquieting. I came in from L.A. on the Coast Starlight, spent the night, then boarded the eastbound California Zephyr the next morning...
