Best stopovers on the CZ -- and other CZ questions

You do realize there is no same day connection between the CZ and CS, there may be to the SJ. So you would need to stay between SAC and EMY overnight.

about the black bear at SPUD

How dare animals come near where people live!

    Reserved Keystones?

What I’ve seen is that they say they assign each passenger a window seat only. But they say if you’re in a group (like a family), you can sit together if you like.

It’s Time For America To Get Serious About Fixing The Trains

Host railroads? Think back 60 years ago! Why do you think Amtrak was formed? Private operators? Such as Iowa Pacific or American Orient Express - where are they now?

    Dining car service

I haven’t traveled recently, but my understanding is that they are providing the boxed meals to sleeping car passengers because the dining car is unstaffed. If that‘s the reason, and there is no staff, it will not be available to coach passengers either. The cafe is still open.

    Reserved Keystones?

“Reserved” only means you have a reservation, not necessarily a specific seat. I think this is COVID related. This way, they can tell how many tickets are sold for that train.

Predominant Positioning of Sleeper(s) on Train 448?

That is true. The vestibule is on the H-Room end, the roomette end just has a sliding door directly to the next car.

about the black bear at SPUD

With all the people staying home and off the streets, there have been many reports of animals running wild on city streets. (Deer, goats, wolves, etc...)

    Modified Boarding and Cafe Service

I agree, it does seem the opposite. Instead of 100 people boarding at 10 open doors, now you have those same 100 people boarding thru only 2 doors! So how does it decrease crowding? Also, since BC is now assigned (and Acela “Regular Seating” is BC), passengers must walk thru 2-3 cars to get to...

Is the Montrealer coming back or just the Vermonter?

Much of the route from SYR to ALB is right along the shore of the Mohawk River, and then much of the route from ALB to NYP is right along the shore of the Hudson River!

Predominant Positioning of Sleeper(s) on Train 448?

I know there is no “Dining Car” anymore, but it was bad enough that the DC was at the other end of the train from the 448/449 sleeper. Now the “Sleeper Lounge” is at the other end of the train!

Cross country travel: are there any quarantines affecting train travel

I hear that the Governors of NY/NJ/CT are proposing a quarantine rule on visitors from states like FL that are having a large increase in cases! Serves them right! After all, fair is fair - they “banned” those “bad New Yorkers from 200-300 miles away from NYC“, so why can’t we ban those “bad...

    Silver Service changes?

It doesn’t make sense that Raleigh (for example) will have service 3 days in a row, and then not for the next 4 days at all! Why not alternate the days (service 1 day, no service the next day)?

about the black bear at SPUD

They probably figured that since it’s near a university, nothing is unusual!🤣

    Amtrak Hubs

The only “hub” (as in hub & spoke) where connections are made between 2 trains is really Chicago. To a lesser extent, NYP, WAS and LAX and PDX can have connections made.

Cross country travel: are there any quarantines affecting train travel

But it is also state funded by NYDOT! So why can’t it operate to those 3 NYS stations north of ALB (SDY, SAR and FED)? And NYDOT also funds the Adirondack, and that too is not operating to ANY station in NYS north of ALB. (And except for Montreal EVERY station on the route is totally in NYS...

    RNO PDX Bus

I also noticed the “Weekend in Portland” days of operation. My opinion is that more people from Portland might want to go to Reno for the weekend than those in Reno would want Portland for the weekend. How many Las Vegas residents would want to go to Yuma, AZ or St George, UT for the weekend vs...

Cross country travel: are there any quarantines affecting train travel

These restrictions don’t make sense. They are not uniform. As an example - Vermont has the 14 day quarantine requirement, so Amtrak canceled the EA north of ALB. (Besides service to VT stations, it also eliminated service to SDY, SAR and FED - NYS stations.) But Florida also had the 14 day...

    Amtrak Service Reductions

I just got a response from my Congresscritter to my “request” regarding the cuts to Amtrak. In the form letter email, it mentions 1) COVID-19, 2) CARES and 3) PPP. What do these have to do with Amtrak? It’s very clear it was not even looked at!

    Amtrak Service Reductions

Amtrak spent $$$$ on all those new Viewliner Dining Cars - and then made them “sleeping class lounge cars” serving boxed meals - and coach passengers can’t even use them for dining! So why have a kitchen?
