Select Executive - Is it enough?

I use my Amtrak Platinum MC for 100% of my charges, and my wife uses her American Airlines card for 100% of hers. We do a fair amount of free travel.

    New member from WV/PA

Years ago, we rode the first ones from Ft. Lauderdale to W. Palm. The employees really "bent over backwards" for the riders. I hope they are still that way.

For us old farts, remember this: On a Superliner, a bottom level roomette will not require climbing getting on or off the train. HOWEVER...you WILL need the steps to get to/from the dining car.

Effect of rising gas prices on Amtrak ridership in summer of '22

Please don't confuse California with the rest of the country.🤣

    New York to Orlando

First off, the food is not "poor", but it's also not "great". Amtrak started this on the Florida/NYC trains in October 2019...3 months before Covid was announced. Now Covid is an excuse.

    Things to take with you

Not many sounds can be heard above the clickety-clack and groaning metal, unless your sliding roomette door keeps sliding open and shut. It's part of the "experience". 😄

History and Future of NJT Rail Lines

As some of you may know, the Gladstone station was the "departing" station in the movie "The Miracle Worker" starring Ann Bancroft (who I met). The storage building, across the tracks, was used as the "arrival" station. The passenger cars were from the nearby Black River & Western RR. The town...

    What should Amtrak change?

Count your blessings. I'm old enough to remember soot on the window ledge while a Long Island RR steam locomotive pulled your very warm coach car. However, as a 9 year-old, I LOVED it.

I tip $20. for my roomette and $20. for my wife's roomette. I do this at the start of the trip. If the service has been "above and beyond", I tip an extra $10. with a "thank you". Out of 7 trips, extra was twice, but it was never poor.

    Location of Sleepers in Consist

The 2 "Silver" NYC to Miami trains are sleepers in rear. It works out well in Philadelphia because the elevator from the "Acela/ Sleeper" lounge goes to that position on the platform.

What Amtrak Routes have you taken?

Silver Meteor (5), Silver Star, Crescent, and Sunset Limited (all in roomettes). NE Regional and Acela Washington to Boston.

    Assigned seats on the train?

This past Fall, we took the Acela to Boston because Amtrak ha a 40% Off special. Usually we take the NE Regional. Few people get off in Philadelphia, so the 2 of us cannot usually get seats together. But in 1 1/2 hours we get to NYC, and most people get off. We can then select "good window"...

Who in the world are you?

I'll be turning 80 in a few weeks. My wife and I have been putting up with each other for 55 years. We have 4 "children" (ages 46-53) and 8 grandchildren (ages 7-26). Rather than a life history, I'll give you my train history: At age 2, my favorite book was "The Little Engine That Could". At age...

Why do people work in on-board jobs on long-distance trains?

I wonder if there is more of a "human contact" factor working a Amtrak sleeper car or even coach. Certainly more than a flight attendant has, as far as I can see. I also wonder how much tips factor in with the total salary of a sleeper attendant. I know the long on/off work schedule would be a...

History and Future of NJT Rail Lines

I lived at the end of the Gladstone line. From 1956 to 60, I took this train to high school in Bernardsville.

Afraid To Travel On Silver Star: Advice For Traveler Anxiety

There is one H (disabled/no bunk beds) room per car. You can request one no sooner than 24 hours before train departure if it has not already been booked by a disabled person.

Afraid To Travel On Silver Star: Advice For Traveler Anxiety

Since I'm familiar with the station...upon arriving, roomette or no, turn your luggage over to a red cap (located mid-section of station), and tip $5. per suitcase. He will take the 3 of you down to the platform in a elevator about 10 minutes prior to the train's arrival, and see that you get...

Afraid To Travel On Silver Star: Advice For Traveler Anxiety

A few years ago a person had a heart attack in Florida (Sebring I think). The train stopped at a crossroad, where a ambulance was waiting. Total time was about 15 minutes. Put the older one in the top bunk. He/she will talk about it all of her/his life. You will regret not getting a roomette...

    What should Amtrak change?

The reason I think they stopped printing timetables is that they make it too easy to see how late your train is running.
