    Sunset Limited discussion

That's the schedule I remember that left LA mid afternoon. I didn't remember when they reverted to the traditional 10 pm LA departure, though. I quite liked that schedule. I thought you got better scenery with it, Beaumont Pass, the Salton Sea, Pecos High Bridge, though it didn't work well for...

If its from the Rio Grande bridge there, then whoever is crossing the river isn't crossing from Mexico...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Second this observation, being a regular rider on the Cascades as well as in the east. The draconian regimen on the eastern cafes is wholly unnecessary.

    Sunset Limited discussion

It runs parallel to the Rio Grande west of Del Rio. But not for terribly long distance. Otherwise it isn't that close to the Rio Grande (except right around El Paso). It never crosses the Rio Grande beyond the crossing just north of El Paso where it goes from New Mexico into Texas, as any...

    Texas Eagle discussion H2 2024

VIA has no conductors, except maybe on the White River-Sudbury RDC run on CP where they still used CP operating crews for a long time. They abolished the position back in the 90s. VIA has two engineers in the cab, the only T&E positions VIA has.

"conductor to the IC. conductor to the IC" is a call i have heard more times than I can count. I really do not care about the whole train hearing. I care about the PA being overused beyond reason.

VIA OBS have radios and communicate using them between themselves, the SM and the diner. It is also used by the SM to communicate with the engineer. The use of the PA is really limited, especially in comparison to Amtrak. However, VIA has its own frequency that is used for OBS communication and...

Fort Worth to Los Angeles bad service

Actually, all VIA trains have Service Managers, not just long distance trains.

My SCAs sometimes ask me because they know I have a scanner.

Fort Worth to Los Angeles bad service

That's probably because someone was probably there or close to admonish those who did that. And people knew it. That OBS crews are wholly unsupervised in field for all practical purposes is at the root of a lot of these problems. This problem is literally decades old. It is Amtrak’s biggest...

Chicago-Detroit-Toronto service proposal with Amtrak/VIA connection in Windsor ON

Yeah, I was looking at it on openrailwaymap.org. They'll need a southwest quadrant connector to enable access to the VIA station without a backup move from the Essex Terminal. I guess I kind of assumed the CN connection because it already has the connection allowing a straight in move.

That isn't something they display. Rest easy, though. Every one of those connections are guaranteed.

Chicago-Detroit-Toronto service proposal with Amtrak/VIA connection in Windsor ON

Would facility in Windsor be joint CBSA/CBP with Preclearance? Any track improvements required or desirable? Imagine they are planning to use CN's connecting branch between the CP Windsor Sub and the VIA Chatham Sub.

Trip planning Olympia, WA circle trip

When a guaranteed connection, which all on this itinerary are, is going to miss, Amtrak generates a list of reservations connecting between the two trains. They proceed to work the list setting up revised itineraries and accommodations. It makes no difference how the reservation was made...

Trip planning Olympia, WA circle trip

I just checked, 11-6-3-14 connecting at SAC, GBB, and LAX consists entirely of guaranteed connections. If booked on a single reservation using Multi-City or an agent the entire trip would be guaranteed. Whether or not it is a good idea is a different issue, but there are no connections lacking...

Trip planning Olympia, WA circle trip

Truly forced connections are indeed not guaranteed. I did not want to get into all the ins and outs checking if a connection is guaranteed or not, even if the city pair doesn't yield a result. That is not an infrequent occurrence due to the kludgy individual city pair by city pair by routing...

Turkey Dinner in the Dining Car

28 still serves the boxed cold dinners out of Portland. They were pretty good when last I rode the Portland section in 2019, far superior to Flex. They were catered locally in Portland. A turkey option on 28 would be more along the lines of a salad with turkey or turkey sandwich than a...

Yep, guarantee only applies to connections on the same reservation number.
