    Auto Train discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

You will want to ask for Customer Relations when you call, not "customer service". The front line agents who cannot do much in a complaint situation are considered "customer service" and my experience is they will not transfer your call to Customer Relations you unless asked. You will probably...

    California Zephyr first time rider

    1. Larger pieces usually are stowed on the common rack downstairs. There is not a lot of space in the 6'x3' roomette. 2. Ice is available. Ask your car attendant for ice, there is no longer self serve ice. 3. The right side relative to the direction is generally is generally best on the...

Again, that pretty much goes for the entire system.

    Auto Train discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Sure they can. Why should the Auto Train be different from other LDs? Indifferent service at high prices is not exactly uncommon.

Booking with points on Southwest Chief?

That is a great solution and a good workaround to avoid the serious issues that have come to light with points and cash. Kudo to you and the agent for working that one out.

    California Zephyr discussion 2024 H2

Honestly, I think most of the reason for the meal times that aren't lining up consistently is just institutional inertia. Until the controversial Crescent schedule revisions a couple years ago, the Crescent had left New Orleans at or around 7 am since Amtrak took it in 1979. Breakfast service...

    VIA New Corridor Trains - 2021 - 2024 Updates

A problem that seems almost exclusive to CN.

Pennsylvanian (the train(s) and route) discussion

That's not unlikely with CTC and bi-directional mulitple main track over timetable and trainorder dispatching with ABS and directional running back in the day. Probably more tonnoage and a lot fewer trains. That's been the trend for years and greatly accelerated with PSR.

    Fare Buckets discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Just for fun I ran the Builder CHI-SEA on railsforless.us for the immediate future, diving into Amtrak.com on some dates to get the bucket breakouts. They are sold out entirely until Monday 10/21, when a single bedroom is available at the $3407 high bucket. The following day, 10/22, there are...

Pontiac IL to Fort Worth TX round trip on the Texas Eagle

As noted in over in the thread on the AGR board, it really looks like agents cannot touch points and cash reservations and may run serious risks to the integrity of the reservation if they try. However, I see that you intend to make a round trip, which wasn't clear in the other thread. It...

    Combining points and cash

Yeah, I just read it and I agree it seems pretty clear points and cash reservations cannot be initiated or touched by an agent other than to cancel one. My guess is that "points and cash" was done "outboard" to ARROW somewhere in the layers between the consumer UIs and ARROW and so cannot be...

    California Zephyr discussion 2024 H2

They never have served breakfast departing the East Bay on either it or its incarnation as the San Francisco Zephyr prior to 1983. It is nothing new and in no way is a reduction in service. They ought to start lunch service around 11.

    California Zephyr discussion 2024 H2

No, first meal served in the dining car is lunch departing Emeryville.

Cross-border checked baggage service for eastern routes

At Vancouver there's a room in the facility to the south of the primary inspection counters that has space and tables for luggage inspection. CBSA does theirs in there. I was pulled into secondary once entering Canada and was sent there. The primary agent was suspicious about my day trip...

Amtrak East Coast single level consist possibilities

Not sure about the eastern Heritage fleet, but when they replaced the original seats on the Hi Levels, they used the same seats as on they had on Superliners. Which was a sad day, as the original Hi Level seating was vastly more comfortable.

Acela 21 (Avelia Liberty) development, testing and deployment (2Q 2024)

Amtrak's Inspector General has already reamed them a new one on Amtrak's oversight and management of this. Not that the IG's report caused any repercussions with the adult day care center that is Amtrak's HQ.

Cross-border checked baggage service for eastern routes

One nuance of the Cascades operation in Vancouver is that the CBP inspection in Vancouver is not full Preclearance. It is US Immigration inspection only, not Customs. US Customs inspection takes place onboard on US soil at the border in Blaine, WA with officers from the adjacent Peace Arch...

Right, even to hold your existing room.

Cross-border checked baggage service for eastern routes

And added a joint Port of Entry facility at Gare Central, which seems to be entirely stalled from all reports. Yes, they unload all bags and place them on the side of the platform before they start releasing passengers from the train. Passengers pick them up before proceeding to CBSA inspection.

    Empire Builder discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

A requirement driven in no small part from BNSF trains smacking into wasted bears foraging for their favorite intoxicant on the ROW.
