Austin to Store New Electric Buses for 1 Year

London's TfL recently converted a route to Electric Bus, route 358 which is a long route South of the city. Geoff Marshall has a video of this route: The buses are made by Irizar a Spanish company that has been around a while. They have 2 charging stations one at each end of the line with...

    What should Amtrak change?

Even today it is not uncommon for there to be no food service to speak of on many European overnight trains. At best you might get a cup of coffee and a roll from the SCA. Of course for Europeans (outside of the UK and Ireland) that is what they call a full breakfast :D I don't know how they...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Basically Qapla is saying you can compare 40/41 to 97/98 and 52/53 to see what kinds of delays other trains besides 40/41 are getting on the same stretch of RR

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I wonder if a solution would be to add an additional set of traffic lights before the RR crossing so that the crossing becomes in effect part of the intersection. Ideally it would also be set up to turn red if a train was coming but I don't know how easy it is to tie the crossing detection to...

Suggestions needed for international rail trip

Since you have all those flyer miles, sounds like someplace far from the US would be the best use. East Asia has a lot of possibilities - Japan, Thailand, Vietnam. I have heard Indonesia has some good trains. As mentioned the cruise trains in Australia such as the Indian Pacific. Also New...

Effective Transit Alliance's view on the New York Regional Rail network

One thing mentioned in this report - the link from Penn Station to Grand Central which is projected would be used by a large number of commuters thus relieving the need to expand Penn Station and reduce crowding on the subway lines on 7th and 8th avenue. Wouldn't this result in even worse...

    Single level trains/Superliner comparison

Also the Viewliner I's have the mostly blue band along the windows with the small red stripes, while the VII's have equal sized red white and blue stripes.

    The Electrification discussion

You have to balance the incremental costs of adding more converters vs. the huge cost of converting the system to 60 HZ. You could no longer feed it from the 25 HZ generators at the Susquehanna River dams, so you have to find new power sources from grids that are already at capacity. This is...

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) discussion

Yes meant to say "were" - as you say, the only interurban left today, the South Shore Line, uses pantographs. Of course a trolleybus would have other limiting factors but the poles should not be one of them.

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) discussion

There are many interurban lines that operated with speeds up to 90 mph using trolley poles, such as the North Shore line.

    Keystone Corridor discussion

Would it be worth converting this one segment when the rest of the NEC is still 25 Hz? Also I'm not sure the older SEPTA equipment that uses the line as far as Thorndale can handle 60 Hz.

    New traveler's checked baggage question

Your checked baggage will be transferred at Chicago. You will not need to transfer it yourself.

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I'm surprised to hear they could change out a wheel anywhere other than a shop like Beech Grove. I would imagine it's not like changing the wheel on an automobile. Doesn't the entire wheel set have to come out?

    Hi there!

Since the Floridian is a single level train it won't have the sightseer lounge observation that the superliner equipped western trains have. If you are in a sleeper they might let you linger in the diner and use that as a lounge.

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) discussion

They have now phased out the SL operation via overhead wire. MBTA seems to have an aversion to trolley buses. They are instead going with the current fad of battery electric. How this will work out we will see. I think they are using CNG buses in the meantime.

    Colorado planning

Interesting concept. At first I was skeptical of the use of the Tennessee Pass route but after watching the video it makes sense. The cost estimates might be a bit optimistic as the rail line essentially unused for 20+ years will probably need some upgrading. I imagine that if the the line is...

Man dies, 15 injured, after two trains collide in Wales

From the report it looks like the collision took place just west of Talerddig where there is a passing loop (passing siding in American) for the otherwise single track line. I rode this line back in 1971 when it was still dispatched using tokens passed between trains at the passing loops...

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) discussion

The Green Line that derailed near Lechmere 2 weeks ago has been determined by the NTSB as operating at 36 mph in an area where the speed limit was 10 mph and passed through a double red (stop and stay) signal onto a switch that was in the process of changing, presumably to route the train to the...
