    Amtrak to Grand Canyon

There is a hotel at the Williams station where the Grand canyon train leaves from. It also has a cafeteria style restaurant which I felt was overpriced and had the ambience of a high school cafeteria. But there are some nice restaurants in Williams within walking distance. We particularly liked...

    Philadelphia to Brunswick ME

Some additional delays. We went into a siding just north of Durham to wait for a freight. Then at Portland 688 the last Eastbound of the day is in the station and only one train can platform at a time so we are being held outside the station. Probably about 30 minutes total delay.

    Philadelphia to Brunswick ME

Downeaster left on time. Some delays going through Andover due to malfunctioning crossing gates that the crew had to flag us across. This made us about 15 minutes late. They may be able to make up some of this time. We have a good crew. I recognized Jamie our cafe attendant she is very attentive...

    Philadelphia to Brunswick ME

Made it to North Station in plenty of time. My son has a bad hip plus he had a large suitcase so we need to use the elevators where possible. Fortunately the downtown stations are well equipped even though some of the elevators were not easy to find. But the T staff were helpful.

    Philadelphia to Brunswick ME

Today September 6 my son Chris and I embarked on a rail trip from the Lehigh Valley of PA to Lewiston ME to attend Chris's older brother Nathan's bachelor party as he is getting married next month. We started out very early around 5 AM to drive to the nearest SEPTA rail station Lansdale which...

Britain's Buses at their Best Video

I found this video by Geoff Marshall interesting. He looked at several bus operations in the UK which have been growing in popularity. In all cases it seems a management that is taking a positive approach and trying to improve service through better frequencies (so people can just turn up and...

    "I like trains"

Reading material can also be a giveaway. One time my sons and I were riding to Boston in the "Amtrak employees car" (a long story for another time) and I saw one guy reading Passenger Train Journal so likely a railfan. I would have liked to have struck up a conversation but didn't get the...

Trains from St. Paul to Chicago in 1944

Also no GPS or Google Maps in those days, you could get free maps at gas stations or for a long trip if you were a AAA member the customized route maps they provided. Navigation could get tricky at times especially if roads were not well marked.

Trains from St. Paul to Chicago in 1944

And that is just the ones with First Class service. There were probably a few "milk runs" also.

Trip Report Video on The Canadian - 73 tips and suggestions

Very nice! The scenery around your hometown reminds me of my previous home in Maine. Great tips. I took the Canadian back in 1984 when it was on the old route via Calgary and Banff. But a lot of the experience looks the same, such as the Park car.

    Philadelphia Amtrak to Villanova University

Looking at the map I see you are right about the NHSL, they now have a walkway across US Route 30 which makes it easier.

    Walking Stick

A comment on terminology - "walking stick" vs "cane". Seems to me that in the US such a device is usually referred to as a cane, but a walking stick in the UK. I recall my wife needing one after hurting her knee on our trip to the UK in 2022. At a "chemist" in London we inquired about a cane...

Little incursion into Ukraine Summer '24

Anywhere in the US outside of the NEC would kill to have this level of connections!

    Philadelphia Amtrak to Villanova University

Currently trains to Paoli/Thorndale on weekends leave 30th St. at 55 minutes past the hour every hour from 6:55 AM. But that may change if a new schedule is introduced. The Villanova station appears to be very close to the campus. There is also a Villanova station on the Norristown High Speed...

New member taking 50 year anniversary trip

Note that if you book 2 roomettes instead of a bedroom you do lose the ensuite bathroom and have to go down the hall to a shared bathroom.

    More trouble for Boeing

Very detailed explanation of what happened. I am hoping the new Boeing CEO can start changing the corporate culture and turning things around.

    California Zephyr discussion 2024 H2

I would think if they were concerned about the track, the Hi-Rail would have preceded the train.

New Orleans or Houston to Palm Springs

Having done the opposite - on a trip to the UK where I was supposed to meet my parents at Gatwick and drive with them to Hastings, then a change of plan caused me to have to do the drive alone, having never driven in the UK before, including a stretch of the dreaded M25 - I would say going from...

Coach USA owner of Megabus files for bankruptcy

His rhetoric doesn't seem to match what is actually happening on the ground, where former Greyhound routes and frequencies are being cut.

    Aristotle (new member)

I seem to recall the NY sleepers back then were Viewliner IIs. Assuming you were in a roomette, if it had a toilet in the room then it was a V1, if no toilet then a V2.
