    Question about cross-country train trip

I highly recommend the Cardinal. The views through the New River Gorge and under the bridge are not to be missed. I also recommend the Portland end of the Empire Builder (often called the Baby Builder). You can immediately take your dinner to the lounge car and enjoy your evening traveling...

    First time Rider!

First of all, I agree with everyone on the personal security question: If you are traveling as a single woman, the most secure place to be is on a train traveling first class (roomette or bedroom). Let me put in a vote for the Coast Starlight going south. It's January and if you are from the...

Advise a circle trip for me!

Sorry, missed your entries when I was reading through. The Cardinal is a beautiful ride through the New River Gorge. I have taken it many times between DC and Charleston, WV, and once from Chicago to DC. I like it much better than the Capitol Limited. I think it is one of the bucket list Amtrak...

Advise a circle trip for me!

I don't know why no one has mentioned the Cardinal. It is by far the best (most scenic) route from New York/Washington to Chicago.

    NE Regional - Roanoke question

    NE Regional - Roanoke question

Rode the branch of the Northeast Regional from RNK to MSS for the first time the other day. When the train backed into the station at Roanoke to start our journey I was surprised at the length of it. Several more coach cars than I expected. Is this maybe because they would use the same train to...

Can We Have A Better Cardinal Schedule, Please?

The proposed schedule above has 50 and 51 going through the New River Gorge in the dark year round. No chance of seeing the scenery of West Virginia or the bridge as you go under it. For anyone who has ever taken the Cardinal, or heard about it from someone who has, the river and gorge...

Dinner eastbound on the Empire Builder out of PDX

We were on the Baby Builder in September. The attendant comes to your room when you get on and hands out the boxed meal of your choice. I only remember being offered a roast beef sandwich and a chicken salad but there may have been a third option. The "salad" was terrible. They put the dressing...
