MARC (Maryland Area Regional Commuter) Equipment

Anyone know about the Camden and Brunswick lines? Is the CSX interference being worked around?

MARC (Maryland Area Regional Commuter) Equipment

On another thread I read about someone talking to a MARC engineer concerning the Charger. The engineer said the locomotive was fine once you got used to it. That could well relate to the setup training problems I read about. Maybe some things are starting to get better. I’m an early riser too...

MARC (Maryland Area Regional Commuter) Equipment

Has MARC service deteriorated noticeably recently? I ride a parallel Metro Rail train, but I read about crew training problems related to Charger locomotive setup, increased CSX interference, and the expectation that PTC will make things worse. All of this on top off existing problems with...

    Is Virginia Railway Express push/pull?

I see VRE almost every morning going over the Potomac on the Long Bridge. Push into DC and loco leads out of DC. I’ve seen as many as eight cars with one locomotive (sometimes two locomotives). The locomotive at the Virginia end is supposed to reduce fumes in Washington Union Station. MARC does...

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2015 - 1Q 2024)

Both the Chargers and P42s are designed for maximum machinery length by placing the cab forward. And both seem to be discouraging anything that is hit from riding up and entering the cab by reverse or vertical slope on the lower part. One just looks like a Siemens locomotive and the other, well...

Elimination of diners on western Amtrak long distance trains?

The Swiss SBB article talks about using the train’s differences from other transport methods as selling points rather than eliminating them in the name of economy. In many cases the door to door time is going to be longer on a train. So what can be used to differentiate the train to someone who...

MARC (Maryland Area Regional Commuter) Equipment

This is a simultaneous meltdown question. IOW. Unless there is a common cause like high wind stopping/slowing all above ground passenger rail operations (it happened), WMATA and MARC are unlikely to meltdown on the same day. They do have some capacity to backup each other. The fact that WMATA...

Elimination of diners on western Amtrak long distance trains?

Can we learn from other countries how to make dining cars an advantage for travelers choosing rail? https://www.railwaygazette.com/news/passenger/single-view/view/fv-dosto-dining-car-unveiled.html

MARC (Maryland Area Regional Commuter) Equipment

I’m used to aircraft and military forums that tend to have bigger topics (Indian Navy, F-35...). Very focused topics seem to wander way off topic quickly. In affect, they become a broader topic but not as easy to find. For example, the MARC and Amtrak HHP-8 failures discussion in the Amtrak...

MARC (Maryland Area Regional Commuter) Equipment

MARC has a few interesting equipment related items that have been spread around on this forum or have no obvious home. PTC and HHP-8 update are two examples. The MRAC (MARC Riders Advisory Council) Minutes are a place to start. https://mta.maryland.gov/marc-riders-advisory-council-meeting-minutes-0

    MARC Chargers are in service

Do you think this could be made into a general MARC forum or is it easier to start a new forum?

    MARC Chargers are in service

FYI. MRAC IS MARC Riders Advisory Council.

    MARC Chargers are in service

I’ve seen MARC Chargers on the Camden line over the last few months including the final one (87). They seem to be getting more rare so maybe they’ve graduated to the Penn and Brunswick lines. The November 2017 MRAC Minutes contain info on the HHP-8 upgrade...

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

700 car potential and night Siemens Viaggio passenger cars. Even smaller European countries use a lot of passenger cars. This includes an interesting render of the inside of a sleeping car...

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

Sorry. I didn’t mean to imply that anyone would build new cars with small windows for a variety of reasons. I just was wondering out loud how much Amtrak would pay extra for a new versus rebuilt cars. And wether it would make a lot of difference for passengers as long as the inside was nice.

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

I’m afraid that the point of the VP on the video was that after the Amfleet cars run out of gas they may decide to fill them back up. If a rebuild saves money, it is an option. I rode an Amfleet car from Baltimore to Boston when they were very new. Even though I wasn’t much of a rail fan at the...

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

I thought the options presented in this video were pretty straightforward. And the video shows how the inexpensive Amfleet makeover buys them a half-dozen years.

Equipment Order in the works this year (2018)?

Barge was noticeably downstream of the current bridge. And didn’t seem associated with any work on the bridge. So it was unusual. It does seem like a combination of DMU, EMU, BMU & TMU (you can’t make all these acronyms up) from someone like Stadler represents the most likely competitor to...
