Twitter trend leads to spat between BART, Amtrak

The article didn't say that Amtrak actually started the "tweet a noun related to your business" trend on September 1st with the "trains" tweet (it went out at precisely 3:00 P.M. Eastern). It's obvious to me (someone who sees a lot of Twitter) that the Amtrak and BART accounts were both being...

    Buffalo, NY

The recent remake of "Nightmare Alley" (which takes place in the late 1930s/early 1940s) was partly filmed at locations in Buffalo, including City Hall...

    Getting a TAP card

I can confirm that Express Transit mode works with L.A.'s TAP cards.

29(7/25) hit a truck at grade crossing - now what?

For your virtual scrapbook, the Amtrak Alerts tweets that covered this situation. (As far as I can tell, they only put out one tweet about the Capitol Limited, the one that says "UPDATE.")

    Pet Peeves

Sounds like you're referring to Danny Simmons. Some of his announcements got recorded in May 1994 by a writer who was interviewing him for Passenger Train Journal magazine.

    Menus on Planes

From what I've seen (on blogs), First Class will get bigger portions and a better presentation than the Business Class versions (i.e., in First Class they'll individually plate the items, whereas Business Class passengers may just get several items on a tray put down in front of them.

Deutsche Bahn has joined the Star Alliance. Should Amtrak follow?

One thing that comes to mind: DB has a lot more frequent, reliable connection options at Star Alliance-heavy airports throughout its home country than Amtrak does.

    LIRR Service to Grand Central

If you believe the Wikipedia page, there will be several street entrances leading to the new station, as well as entrances from inside the current Grand Central. So it looks like the answer to your question is "both."

Los Angeles - Las Vegas Bus

This is a press release and schedule from May 2021, which doesn't necessarily mean the bus is still running in May 2022. The Thruway Bus page on the Pacific Surfliner website (here) and the current PDF Pacific Surfliner timetables (here) do not mention anything about a Las Vegas bus. I strongly...

    Irish rail trip possibilities

Dublin also has a U.S. Customs preclearance facility, so you'll save time by not having to go through customs at a U.S. airport.

Niece will start rail commuting, need gift ideas for her

Does she already have an e-reader or tablet? If so, I'm thinking something along the lines of an Amazon gift card (if she has a Kindle) or an Apple gift card (if she has an iPad), with the "suggestion" that she could use them to buy e-books to read on her commute.

    April trip

Correct. At the 7th Street/Metro Center station, you'll be going upstairs to make the transfer. Don't forget to listen for announcements and/or check the destination signs of the trains at the upstairs platform, since the A Line (Long Beach) also operates from that platform.

August 1969 I took the Mohawk Airlines cargo shuttle from Boston to Detroit.

Does this look familiar? (This is the one PBA timetable I have in my collection -- I never actually flew them, but I must have just grabbed this in Tampa from their ticket counter or a gate.)

Fare Systems - POP or not

I never heard your explanation -- the only thing I ever heard is that they decided there was too much fare evasion on the heavy-rail lines. (And the system is still POP at most light rail and busway stations... at many of those stations, it would be unworkable to add turnstiles.)

Brighton, Sussex, England - Cafe recommendation

I haven't been to Brighton, but I've read a Graham Greene novel that takes place there, "Brighton Rock."

    April trip

The preferred route shown on Google Maps is 1.6 miles from the Metro Plaza hotel to the entrance to the Dodger Stadium parking lots -- which are, for some reason, green on the map even though they're mostly asphalt/concrete. Figure maybe another half a mile from the spot where the dotted line...

    April trip

I highly recommend the free Dodger Stadium Express shuttle bus service from Union Station, especially since the game is almost certainly going to be a sellout.

Radio stations along Texas Eagle route

I collect old radio station jingles, and happen to have some from WLAM from the early 1970s. "WLAM, from Central Maine with love." (Since they're playing oldies, those jingles would probably still fit in well today!)
