Amtrak Alerts Tweet Regarding SWC 4 (8/28)

I don't know what happened leaving Los Angeles, but that's a very good indication of how much padding there is in the schedule!

    CZ CHI to EMY

Not sure what the current state of the F line fleet is, but it used to be a pretty safe bet that they'd have the boat tram running on sunny weekend days. (Of course, at present, they should have them out on the line all the time, since they're about as "open-air" as you can possibly get!)

VTA (San Jose) still not running after shooter incident.

Based on this blog post from the transit authority, it seems like the big issue is having employees be comfortable with working at the location of the shooting (which is perfectly understandable).

Is Fraser-Winter park a smoke stop on the CZ

Although if the train is running late, the stops may be abbreviated to try to make up time - I was once the only passenger boarding a CZ at Fraser when it was about 2½ hours late, and the stop was just long enough for me to get on the train (less than 30 seconds).

AU Members with Frequent Flyer Affinity Status

The first few years I lived in L.A., I tended to fly American because of MRTC and because they had mainline service out of the Burbank airport (to DFW). Both of those ended up going away.

    Greetings from Bonnie Scotland...

Here I am at Fort William in front of the Jacobite locomotive right before we rode behind it to Mallaig and back -- date of the photo is September 25, 2014.

    Greetings from Bonnie Scotland...

When some friends and I visited Scotland in 2014, we did a round-trip on the steam-hauled tourist train (the Jacobite) over that route to Mallaig. Looks like you had slightly better weather than we did -- we had pretty steady rain and fog, enough that we didn't get much of a view going over the...

    Transfer LAX to Amtrak

To clarify (particularly here in the guest forum, in case anyone happens to find this thread), that's the original name of the facility that's now known as "Los Angeles Union Station." The name was changed over 30 years ago.

    Moynihan Station

In general, rideshare drivers can drop off in any spot that's otherwise legal for any private vehicle to drop someone off, so you shouldn't need to direct the driver to drop you off at a specific location.

    Amtrak's 50th and WDW's 50th anniversary

It was definitely a coincidence -- WDW was already in the planning/land acquisition stages long before the federal government started planning the concept that eventually became known as Amtrak. (For that matter, WDW was well into construction before Amtrak was officially signed into law in...

Vintage railway film - ***** and Span - 1962 British Rail...

I found the website about the project -- very interesting. (In brief, it appears that they're going to build a new "landside" building right next to the "airside" building, which also involves building new parking garages, roadways, etc.)

Vintage railway film - ***** and Span - 1962 British Rail...

The Pittsburgh airport is basically two separate buildings, connected by an underground train: the main terminal, where ticketing, baggage claim, and the security checkpoint are, and then an X-shaped building where all the gates are. The shopping area is basically in the middle of the X. Moving...

Vintage railway film - ***** and Span - 1962 British Rail...

From a little research, it does appear that they still do have that policy in place (and Allegheny County, which oversees the airport, regularly reviews the pricing at shops and restaurants). I passed through a few years ago when I was visiting Pittsburgh, and the airport seemed like a...

    Seaboard92 Is Taking Off

Good luck! Hope we'll be able to "catch your smile" soon (at least, once there's no longer a mask mandate).

Vintage railway film - ***** and Span - 1962 British Rail...

I may have figured this out from eating the "Herbed ham and roasted peppers on sundried tomato bread" sandwich you see in the photo above. :D (My recent experiences with buying sandwiches on American trains have all involved the Pacific Surfliner, and those sandwiches have been pretty good.)

By 2014, they had Coke products (at least, whichever operator was doing Edinburgh-to-London back then did) -- this is my photo of what I got from the snack car:

When I was there in 2014, the National Railway Museum had a display of the interior of a 1970s British Railways snack car, complete with disposable cups.

    Avelo Airlines Set To Takeoff

I was eating at a restaurant in Lancaster (California) last week, and overheard people at a table near me talking about Avelo -- one of them said it would be less than $300 to take his family to Bozeman, Montana, even paying extra for checked bags and seat assignments. (I was seated outdoors...

Coast starlight run on time North out of Emeryville?

If you can't get on the later bus, there are a number of things to do right around the Emeryville station -- there are a bunch of restaurants, shops, and even a movie theater (in the Bay Street complex).
