I flew from New York to Boston and returned on Amtrak. Here's why the train blew the plane out of the water during the pandemic.

OK, someone beat me to it, but a post 44 pages deep into a thread, isn't all that obvious. ;)

    Bedroom Luggage Capacity

Hadn't thought much of it, but I use a pair of older, hard-side, "weekend" size suitcases, which slide under the chairs in a roomette (one under each).

    New DOT Secretary?

I am unsure what this will all mean. While Buttigieg is a competent person, and stood up quite well on the National political stage, I would have never thought of him as the best expert we have on transportation. President (Elect) Biden has more pressing issues, like Covid-19 and the economy...

    My February Trip—New Sleepers?

Car 9210 is simply the 10th car in the consist of train 92, and car 9212 is simply the 12th car in the consist of train 92. How would that dictate that the car has to be a VL 1 or a VL 2?

Viewliner II Part 4: Sleeping Car production, delivery, deployment

Amtrak could save even more maintenance costs by removing the commodes from the bedrooms too. Ditto for all the Superliners too.

Viewliner II Part 4: Sleeping Car production, delivery, deployment

Me too. And even more so now with Covid-19. I would not want to share a toilet that could be coated in viruses.

    New DOT Service Animal definitions

True. Several top Samoyeds were killed, on their way to a National Show, because the airline pilot forgot to flip the switch to pressurize and heat the plane's cargo hold. However, even with a tragedy like that, doesn't give dog owners the right to falsely claim their show dog is an ADA...

    New DOT Service Animal definitions

The ADA never covered a vast array of animals. It was the constant violators who perpetuated that kind of lie. Basically, if one repeats a lie enough, people start to believe it is true (gee, I heard/read that before so it must be true).

    New DOT Service Animal definitions

I know this is about Amtrak, but I know that the AKC is attempting to tackle the run-away problem of numerous Show Dogs being falsely ID'ed as being Service Dogs, when flying to major dog shows. Beyond this, at least emphasizing its only dogs (or miniature horses), will stop people from falsely...

    New DOT Service Animal definitions

This really isn't all that of a substantial change. The US Dept of Justice, way back in 2010, issued official guidance on Service Animals under the ADA. They stated that only dogs are recognized as Service Animals under the ADA. Though, later in the same document, they added that miniature...

    Can crew open sleeper doors?

At least on the Viewliner roomettes, I have seen all sorts of locks on the sliding door. It seems that as the original locks broke over the years (decades?), the ingenious repair people have each come up with their own way of replacing it. I don't think any of these, could be easily opened...

    Bedroom vs. Roomette?

We share a bathroom at home. Sharing the roomette with my kid wasn't all that bad. Plus, as required, one of us could easily go for a walk; check out the other views, check out the other cars. In the viewliner, one can pull down the upper, and still sit in the chairs. My kid used the...

Auto Train: Why not more routes?

Equipment sitting idle for those other days, rarely makes for a good business case/justification. Good point. You'll need a substantial number of the prospective passenger pool, wanting to stay at the destination for a relatively long time. For example, competing with a $100/week rental...

Making Advance Reservations for next summer

I don't think I would make an assumption like that. I would schedule based on today's departures, and be prepared to adapt to what ever future changes happen to be made.

    Post-vaccine Amtrak travel

To simply go to a public school (and probably most private schools too) already requires proof of vaccines for communicable diseases. A vaccine for Covid-19 will simply be added to the list. IMHO, to date, this vaccine requirement hasn't been declared to be a violation of personal rights...

New FRA rule for Amtrak performance on host railroads

I remember back when Amtrak and CSX came to an understanding about east coast trains. It was great that the Silvers ran mostly on time (and even many times arrived early). It didn't last all that long. What I would like to see is an end to "loco non gratae". Once a train is late, Amtrak...

    Biden Amtrak article 11/15

I know that outgoing presidents usually leave a letter for the incoming president, and typically it offers advice like not spreading yourself too thin. Pick one goal, they write, and put 100% effort into it. If Biden follows this, I don't think the one issue he'll champion would be passenger...

Checking up on Amtrak's (lack of) ADA compliance

Actually, IMHO, Amtrak is doing an excellent job accommodating those who are truly handicapped. From my experiences in life, 90% (probably closer to 99%) of people, who are wrongly taking advantage handicapped accommodations, aren't actually handicapped. Let me give one example (there are...

    Post-vaccine Amtrak travel

If we are talking about Trump's COVID-19 vaccine announcement today, I think this headline sums it up best.
