    Amtrak P42C cab car

VIA is also expected to order 30+ locomotives for long distance services. Expect a variant of a well-known freight locomotive to receive preference over Siemens, given Amtrak's issues and employee input.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Solid read - particularly the detail on which Superliners are out-of-service. I think most knew it was bad, but not that bad. A VIA-style refurb on the Santa Fe Hi-levels may have been money well spent in hindsight.

Could EMDI be something that would help Amtrak

There's an infamous term from the past.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Especially with proximity to Detroit and Southern Ontario. I'm not familiar with Toledo's station but Cleveland would have to improve their parking to make this work.

Which US airlines do you recommend for domestic service?

This is becoming the "catch-all" excuse for no service on shorter flights - even in the front cabin. "The captain is predicting turbulence so the flight attendants will remain in their seats" on several recent flights. Turbulence never materialized and neither did any service. Austrian Airlines...

New high speed service between Berlin and Paris (2024)

I think you meant Capitol and Silver Star. There has also been Nightjet service on this route for awhile now. IIRC the "new" train was first talked about pre-pandemic. No surprise it has taken this long to launch.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

How so? Lots of precedent, including when the Silvers had run-through sleepers from either the Broadway or Capitol Limiteds and briefly the Montrealer.

Freight shutdown due to strike in Canada

The next round is starting: https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/canada/unifor-initiates-labor-negotiations-with-canadian-national-railway/ar-AA1r4EBt?ocid=hpmsn&pc=EUPP_&cvid=0c925314c53e49cdbd23dafab3992851&ei=49 It will be interesting to see if the government intervenes again given this is only...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

We're already talking about a nostalgic trip on this train. With a few variations it's very similar to how we used to go to Florida almost every year when our kids were younger. Toronto (International) > Hammond-Whiting > Broadway or Capitol to Philly or Washington (sometimes with through...

Proposed closure of Montreal commuter rail lines

This has been the subject of recent discussion in rail groups here. Local expert @Urban Sky made some excellent observations in another forum which, if he chooses to share here, clear up some of the misconceptions or omissions in the media accounts.

The problem is they'd pick Motel 6 and Taco Bell. ;)

Eric & Pat’s September 2024 Trip Report: San Diego - Toledo - San Diego

Thank you for the thorough and timely report. Timely because, with little happening in the news and sports world, I logged onto AU this morning hoping for something interesting to read. You did not disappoint.

    Adirondack discussion

Several of GO Transit's O&O track segments have concrete ties - installed under contract by CN, so they do know how to do it.

Service meltdown on VIA train 622; passengers stranded

Agree completely. It's less about your device than the carrier's IT systems. Paper wins every time, and I apply the same rule to air travel. There is nothing worse than trying to get rebooked at an out-station on rail or air and you don't have access to internet, with the boarding pass having...

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

At that time I would definitely recommend a cab to one of the several hotels in the "LA Live" complex or other downtown chain hotel such as the Bonaventure or Sheraton. At the risk of sounding sexist, I would not recommend two ladies walking with luggage anywhere near Union Station that time of...

Trains from St. Paul to Chicago in 1944

Classic example of the perfect niche for rail - short to fly, long to drive. 🤔
