    Train 49 NYP-CHI Viewliner Orientation

It would not be rude to ask to use a vacant roomette. There is no guaranty that your request would be granted. If the attendant agreed to it you could offer a tip of a few dollars but I would not tip for this specific request but consider a larger tip at the end of the trip if the service...

    Use of amfleet-cafecar as sightseeingcar

Yes, that is an acceptable use of the lounge car on the Lakeshore. I'm certain I will be corrected if wrong but I believe the even numbered roomettes are on the Hudson River side going from New York City to Albany. That would be a good time to visit the lounge car.

    why can't food be better

You have a legitimate beef about the list of food ingredients provided by Amtrak being inadequate. There have been a number of threads/posts related to its inadequacies.

    why can't food be better

The link below is for the BBB Amtrak page. Looks like there have been plenty of complaints filed. I didn't dig through for food related complaints but thought others might be interested in looking at the site...

    Capitol Limited Consist-January

Thanks. I forgot that the seating on the two sides were different. Back in 2009 on the CL the side with the mafia seats was the one used for dining service.

I can't tell from the picture but have the triple c's been reconfigured to remove the booths that face inward towards the aisle? The so called "mafia seats".

New Dining Car Menus Nov. 4

With Aramark you get what you pay for. Aramark had the contract for the cafeteria at my former employer and the food was quite good. They also handled the Executive dining room and staffed a private Chef. That food was extremely good in both quality and presentation. Sodexo replaced Aramark...

    Chris Matthews Amtrak segment

The smile on his face at the start of the segment says a lot. Family, old friends, new friends on a train will do that to your face. Well done!

There's Business Class then there's Business Class

Did they still have pillows to hand out? Two years ago, shortly after Amtrak ended pillows in coach, the attendant said the Carolinian was the only Amtrak train that still offered pillows. She said that the state of NC was funding it. On the east coast, the Carolinian Biz class is far...

    Capitol Limited

Brenda was the best SCA I've encountered on the rails, and yes, she retired right around 2008. She had the knack of knowing when you needed her and when to leave you alone without having to be told.

    Scenery on the Pennsylvanian?

This is going back to the 80's on the Broadway. West of Lancaster into Altoona you will see the rolling farmlands. I was travelling in October and saw the Amish farmers, with their teams of horses, harvesting the fields. Being on a trains and seeing horses farming the land took me back in time.

Night Owl on the Inland Route?

I am only familiar with one Night Owl that operated on the current New Haven to Boston route. As I recall it had both a 10-6 Heritage sleeper and a slumbercoach. Also had a cafe car and maybe 2-3 coaches. This is going back to the early 80's. At one time it did have a set out sleeper that...

    The Future for DC-to-Richmond Rail

My read of the hub aspect, and other articles regarding RVM redevelopment is more along the lines of an intermodal hub that would include inter-city/commuter trains, buses, cabs. Not a hub in the sense of Chicago or New York. Being a native RVR'r I wouldn't complain if it did become a true...
