Temporary cancellation of Southwest Chief between CHI and KCI?

You are right. It was Omaha, not Kansas City. I was mistaken.

Temporary cancellation of Southwest Chief between CHI and KCI?

I noticed that due to track work, the Southwest Chief is not running between CUS and KCI due to track work on April 7 & 8. I am curious though. Why is the train terminating at Kansas City rather than detouring over the former Rock Island like how the Texas Eagle sometimes detours over the former...

Amtrak California Equipment on the Move South

Thanks . In hindsight, It probably would have been better for me to sleep on it before making a post. I tend to start asking silly questions with obvious answers, like the superliner question, when I'm tired.

Amtrak California Equipment on the Move South

I have a bunch of questions about options that Amtrak has for dealing with this situation. 1. Is there any possibility of Amtrak borrowing additional spare cars from the various commuter rail agencies in California (particularly Metrolink seeing as Amtrak actually operates that service)? 2...

Historic lack of New York-Chicago day trains

Come to think of it, the City was carrying 25 sacks of mail the day Steve Goodman rode it, but it was on a slower schedule by then. Did it handle mail and express when it first began operations in 1947? If so, that makes its schedule almost unbelievably impressive.

Historic lack of New York-Chicago day trains

Listening to the classic Steve Goodman/Arlo Guthrie song "City of New Orleans" got me thinking. As I'm sure you know, when it was inaugurated in 1947, the song's namesake, despite its run of more than 900 miles, operated on a daytime schedule, departing at 8 AM and arriving just before midnight...

Derailment of Cascades #501, DuPont WA, 2017-12-18

What I dont understand is, why was a newly constructed line allowed to open without positive train control in place?

Power outage at crossings causes Downeaster cancellations?

Wow! That is certainly a large number of crossings. I can see now why that would be a problem. I have another question by the way, that I alluded to in my initial post. I know this ended up having nothing to do with being the reason for the service disruption, but I am still wondering how track...

Power outage at crossings causes Downeaster cancellations?

I see. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how many crossings there are on the route of the Downeaster?

Power outage at crossings causes Downeaster cancellations?

I understand that. My question is, if the crossing signals aren't working, can't the train just be flagged through the crossing? That's why I'm wondering if maybe the reporter was misinformed and that the actual problem was that the track signals failed, forcing a reversion to train order...

Power outage at crossings causes Downeaster cancellations?

I just read this article saying that some Downeaster trains todaywere canceled because a power outage caused some grade crossing signals to fail. This doesn't make much sense to me. Can't the crew just stop the train ahead of the affected crossings and have a crew member flag it through? I'm...

    Station or Terminal

I agree that the distinction is largely confined to American English. In London, the various termini, despite all having stub end tracks (at least until the completion of Crossrail next year), are all referred to as stations, such as Victoria station or Waterloo station. That being said, the...

Question about historical Chicago transfer of coast-to-coast through s

I have noticed that during the time when there were through sleepers from New York to Los Angeles via Chicago that the two trains involved often used different stations in Chicago. For example, the General and Los Angeles Limited exchanged a through sleeper with each other but the General used...

what is the longest train(based on scheduled hours)

I was only ever trying to say that the Donetsk area is a war zone not all of Russia and Ukraine. Sorry if I was unclear.

what is the longest train(based on scheduled hours)

If you are referring to my comment, I wasn't talking about crime concerns; I was under the impression that there is still ongoing fighting in the Donetsk area as part of the War in Donbass. If this is not the case, I retract my statement.

what is the longest train(based on scheduled hours)

Are the trains to Donetsk even running right now? Isn't the city kind of a war zone?

what is the longest train(based on scheduled hours)

Moscow to Vladivostok as Carolina Special mentioned, is the longest journey by a complete through train. If through car operations are considered, than the longest is a twice a month Moscow to Pyongyang through sleeper.

what is the longest train(based on scheduled hours)

Just a side note that if you use a definition that counts the Texas Eagle as the longest current Amtrak train, than the longest through service ever to involve Amtrak was a through New York-Los Angeles sleeping car via New Orleans operated by Amtrak and the Southern Railway around the mid 1970's...

    Amusement parks trips on Amtrak

The thruway bus from Martinez to Napa stops at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. There are frequent shuttle buses from Old Town station in San Diego to Sea World. The Seaside Pier in Atlantic City is a 30 minute walk from the Atlantic City Rail terminal, but the city is very walkable.

Northern New England Intercity Rail Update

Just out of curiousity, why did evaluating the enviromental impact fall under the purview of the FRA and not EPA?
