What's the deal with the Texas Eagle?

Hi, Bob... Greetings from North Texas! I've not been around for awhile, trying to close out a 57 year career, settle my Dad's estate, and resettling my Aunt. After 1 Nov, I will have more time on my hands, and of course, the AMTRAK jones on my back is getting insistent - not to mention my...

    Dinner tonight on SW Chief

I guess in a pinch, one could choke down a can of the Hormel stuff if you can't find a can of Wolf Brand Chili. :) My daughter and I just returned from a DAL-CHI-TRE trip on the Eagle and the Capitol Limited. Great SAs, same slop. When we told the SAs we would demur on their offer for "meal"...

    Dinner tonight on SW Chief

I would prefer a can of Dinty Moore Beef Stew in a bowl any time over the slop now being foisted upon us. I always have a couple of cans in the larder, along with Mary Kitchen Hash, SPAM singles and Wolf Brand Chili. Not nuts and berries or roots and shoots for me!'

    Oh yes, I remember now.

    Dinner tonight on SW Chief

Not aware of a pizza party. We've encountered the FLEX chazerai before. It seems some trains are getting dining back. Not sure about the Texas Eagle, which appears to be a redheaded ******* stepchild like the CONO and Capitol Limited. No Sightseer Lounge on the Eagle now, despite the fact that...

    Dinner tonight on SW Chief

/SNIP/ On the topic of the OP, what did Amtrak offer vegan/gluten free individuals? The ersatz "Enchiladas" are noted as "Vegan". The dry, overcooked and impossible to chew Red Wine Braised Beef is noted as "Gluten Free" That according to the menu on the Texas Eagle Wed/Thurs of this week...

Negative long distance trip review article based lack of value and inedible food

Just crappy writing. If you weren't aware of the physical construction of the upper bunk, you would at first believe it was more like a hammock. One presumes he referred to the straps which keep one from rolling out of bed.

    Dinner tonight on SW Chief

The egregious spelling errors I find in resumes which land upon my desk nowadays would gag a vulture. I tend to send these resumes to the bottom of the pile, as I prefer that my employees not appear to our customers as either 2nd grade dropouts or gibbering idiots. (Apologies to 2nd grade...

    Dinner tonight on SW Chief

I refer to a large pad of NCR paper forms. Top copy should go to receiving station, 2nd to writer's files, 3rd stays in form book for reference and for signoff when repairs are done. I see lots of things writen up multiple times, yets the error appears to be ignored.

    Dinner tonight on SW Chief

Note "Conductors have been "ENCOURAGED to report". The word "ENCOURAGED" is the key word here. I have seen the Bad Order forms which are sometimes left in the baggage area by lazy SCAs who couldn't be bothered to put them away. Several instances of multiple trips SAS-CHI with the same problem...

Locked the bathrooms on Texas Eagle

If you HAVE to travel and MUST be on time, then flying, with all its warts, is the way to go, I guess. Fortunately after over 40 years of weekly air travel, I haven't been on an aircraft in 8 years. Retiring in October, and plan to travel a nunch, but will travel on AMTRAK or Tesla. I love...

Locked the bathrooms on Texas Eagle

"Nice" seats on a 737? No thanks. TSA. Center seats. Love Field. Treated like cattle. Pass.

    Roomette location?

Indeed, if there are two engines, there is no thru access to the front, unless someone wants to do a Gene Wilder rooftop walk... No nose door. Ahh, with a single engine, but as you walk along the walkway, the purring of those lovely Diesels is a song that warms the heart of some of us.

    Roomette location?

The "Transdorm" car was originally called the "Transition Sleeper". It was built to provide a transition from the two level cars to single level cars, and for access to the engine by the crew. Also at the top of the front stairs had a larger room for the Lead Service Attendant, a species now...

    Roomette location?

Get a Keurig Single serve. Small, easy to use, and your cup is always fresh. Search "Keurig Single Serve" on Amazon and you can fing both Keurig specific and many other makes which are K-Cuo compatible as well as some who do loose coffee and tea. $40-$100. You get bottled water from the SCA.

    Roomette location?

If you enjoy solitude, peace and relative quiet, this is for you. No through traffic other than the employees headed who rest there. It can be a little hard to get an SCA's attention, as the SCA from the next car deals with your room. Yes, the engine horn is a little louder, but that may or may...

Amtrak goes straight to STB to restore Gulf Coast service.

Sounds like a ruse to derail AMTRAK from restoring The Sunset.

Amtrak goes straight to STB to restore Gulf Coast service.

Could you please explain the last sentence "Mobile - Jacksonville between Pensacola and close to Jacksonville does not involve any Class I railroad any more" ? Thanks!

Amtrak goes straight to STB to restore Gulf Coast service.

Glowry Be!!! Looks like only NOL-Mobile. Is this just a baby step for NOL - JAX? Now it is time to voice our opinions of support to our fearless elected leaders.
