IND does NOT have baggage service. I think the better option is to check your baggage to CHI, but only collect your baggage when you arrive at the station to go to IND. I have done that in LAX without any problem. Amtrak will hold your baggage for one day after arrival.

Same thing happened to us in March of 2013. A large rock hit the wheel on one of the engines as we were traveling through the Rocky Mountains. We were 14 hours late in arriving EMY, and the UP engine was the lead engine on our train.
