Spending a Downeaster trip in the cafe car?

Although there are about 15 seats in B/C you might want to ask the tix agent if there were any cancellations. The one side seats (it's a 2+1 configuration) ought to be just what you are looking for. Good luck! :)

    Viewliner Diner

GE's have NEVER been known for their acceleration....if anything their claim to fame is spending more shop time than most other locomotives. I still contend that there has to be F-40's floating around Amtrak back tracks without prime movers. All you need is the traction motors and add/re-furbish...

    Adding Padding?

Maybe an engine change at Albany ???

    Viewliner Diner

Yes, but to Mr. Micah he will try to make it look like New year's Eve in Times Square and has said so many times. His latest is a list of small airports that are federally subsidized~ eack pax tix costs over $3,000...and he worries about land cruises where the worse, IIRC, is the Sunset which...

    How The AT Switches Power

Very nice video...in my day, if the trainmaster saw that kid make the A/C walk all that way to line a switch he would be home for lunch.

    Circling North America in '75

Wonderful report...almost makes me want to turn the clock back. I noticed the four (4) Southern units (eight sets of main reservoir tanks) on the Crescent at B'ham~ was this the old L&N station or the Southern station?

Dealing with Passengers Unhappy with Community Dining

I agree with your post. I've only had to leave a table once and that was because a rather tipsy pax spilled a split of wine on me. Nice way to meet different, and sometimes strange, people. But what the heck; you only go round once and you might meet someone you'll enjoy. From the OBS side~...

Todays TE#22 5 Hours Late out of SAS

Years ago Amtrak had a brain storm of converting "B" units to fuel cars and run working units into the ground.Last time I saw one was in NOL and it looked awful~ another waste of big bucks. My proposal to alleviate this one engine day dream is to purchase some slugs with HEP power sources so...

    Viewliner Diner

Jis...I think everybody is missing my point. If the LSL gets the new Viewliner diners all I propose is for the Cardinal to get the hand me down Heritage diners.

    Viewliner Diner

But we're not taking into account the coach pax who may want to eat in the diner plus the OBS has to eat also (yes, I know, they already do.)Right now I wouldn't buy a tix based on the horror stories of packed premises for meal periods and lack of decent menu items for lack of a grill. If I want...

    Viewliner Diner

Maybe, just maybe, they'll shuffle the LSL's diner to the Cardinal in the interim while they wait on a Viewliner...

    Extra soda at meal time

Well you were handed what is called a "comp"~ it is usually gaven away in NEC biz class or as a mixer on LD trains. Occassionally, someone will order water with their cocktail so the LSA has a little slack in handing out small Pepsis.

    Amtrak Service Manual

Good golly...if a conductor did all he was assigned to do the train may never leave the station. On the other hand 99.9% of conductors, and especially OBS would flunk a rules examiner's ride before they left the station !!!

    Dining Cars

Simple answer~ dining cars~ DO! Diner lite cafe conversions~ don't do unless you have to. :help:

    Extra soda at meal time

That's a man !!! BTW, the Crecent used to have a liquer menu. Can one still get a hi-ball or after dinner apertife in the diners? (I usually carry my own private stock and I eat while Jim guards the stash;) I wouldn't think he would partake while I'm gone...

What's the latest a train has ever been?

Latest train I was on was a re-positioning move on the Sunset~ we left NOL three days late and arrived Orlando even later... :giggle:

    Extra soda at meal time

If you order a soft drink and water be sure you ask for bottled water or else you'll get whatever comes out of the tap!One LSA told me that's how he makes up for his shortages~ he charges for bottled water and pours a glassful out of the galley.

    Air conditioning on the Crescent?

All I can say Alan is Albany never has shown me much in railroading...remember the old fiasco of trying to fold the Boston section to the NYP section. My chocolate lab could have had the train out in half the time.  :help: :help:
