This issue has come up a number of times. This is Amtrak's policy for Sleeping Car patron meals:

• Breakfast consist of one (1) Breakfast entrée and one (1) Breakfast meat along with coffee, tea and a choice of juice. (One or more nonalcoholic revenue beverages - soda or bottled water may be provided to the passenger upon request during the meal period only.)

• Lunch and Dinner consist of one (1) entrée with two (2) sides, one (1) dessert and one (1) non-alcoholic beverage per meal period. (A second non-alcoholic revenue beverage - soda or bottled water may be provided to the passenger upon request during the meal period.)

Seems like one is entitled to a second soft drink

You mean I have missed out on over $20 of value over these years and they have gained an extra $1.30 from my ignorance? I'm sad. I will be sure to invoke that rule in the future.

This is another rule that the dining car crews seam to mess with. Some crews will let you get another some won't sell you another and some seam to hesitate when you ask. On the TE going to and from the STL gathering we had the same crew and they were freindly and let us have a 2nd drink no problem.

If you order a soft drink and water be sure you ask for bottled water or else you'll get whatever comes out of the tap!One LSA told me that's how he makes up for his shortages~ he charges for bottled water and pours a glassful out of the galley.

Just buy a split of wine...problem solved.

That's a man !!! BTW, the Crecent used to have a liquer menu. Can one still get a hi-ball or after dinner apertife in the diners? (I usually carry my own private stock and I eat while Jim guards the stash;) I wouldn't think he would partake while I'm gone...

Last time I was on the Capitol, I returned to the dining car not long after finishing breakfast and asked the wonderful dining car attendant where I could buy an extra soda (I had a headache and the caffeine helps). I won't use her name so she won't get in trouble, but she just gave me a handful of the small cans of Pepsi.

I'm on the Cap again in September, I hope I see her again. She made breakfast really fun, joking and chit chatting with the guests and giving me a bit of a ribbing for not remember which car I was in (it was early!). Then I can leave her a bigger tip.

Jay: Haven't you heard the old saying about " I'll trust you with my wife, my kids and my money, but not my Whiskey!"   AFAIK you can still order the same alcohol served in the cafe/lounge car in the diner @ the same inflated prices! )

Well you were handed what is called a "comp"~ it is usually gaven away in NEC biz class or as a mixer on LD trains. Occassionally, someone will order water with their cocktail so the LSA has a little slack in handing out small Pepsis.

I've never had a problem getting a second drink. I'll usually have a soda with my meal and ask for a glass of milk with my dessert.
Likewise. Never had a problem getting two cans of soda either.
Twice I've had a problem getting a second soda. Once in 2007 on the CS between SBA and SJC had a roomette and they made an announcement in the Dining Car and throughout the train about sodas. How we were limited to one and how we would be charged for a second. My Dad and I had two for lunch and dinner and we were charged. Second was on the CL in 2002. Same case. Maybe it's my luck!

The change to the service standards manual, allowing more than one soda per sleeper passenger per meal, was effective in mid 2008 IIRC. Before that, you had to pay the full menu price for a second soda or bottled water, even if you were in a sleeper

As with Ryan and Jis I've never had a problem receiving refills of anything that's non-alcoholic on the routes I ride. Maybe if you get a bad server or if you really overdo it with requests you might see them get snippy but so far no problems here.
