There are short haul runs where the equipment isn't squeezed by mega-miles. One that comes to mind is the Downeaster.

I have to totally agree with your comments. I noticed the car they called "UP" as one of the Chicago & North Western business train cars that the UP broke up and sold off after the merger. NC is very smart in all their choices of equipment and adding life to cars Amtrak would send out to be cut up.

This only emphasizes my prediction for a lousy summer operationally speaking. I'm sorry Jim can't make his turns but I wouldn't want to be stuck in bum diddely because of an overworked unit. Amtrak has been rolling the dice too long with one unit LD trains. Now, what kind of equipment is Chicago...

Sunnyside yard does an awful lot of switching in a confined area of Queens; if a car needs to be cut in or out this is the place. It's not much different than switching box cars except every car is shoved to a coupling and air is used for safety.

The Express box car service were eliminated but Express Baggage service is carried in the baggage cars of all LD trains and #66-67.

When things start to go bad on Amtrak they usually stay that way...sorry you wanted a better experience and didn't get it. The City does travel the mainline of mid-America but unfortunately some of the NOL based crews are awful, no just down right terrible but the good crews far and away surpass...

At home I go to bed with the chickens and wake them up in the morning...now on a train I try to take a nap after lunch and usually make midnight lights out. But then I'm up at 4:30 which almost guarantees a shower spot and early breakfast.

You make a valid point from a pax view but...there are thieves in the world and sometimes an LSA will check his inventory and can't watch all that is going on behind his/her back.It's not a slap in the face to you personally. The LSA has to make up for any short falls in inventory on pay...

Correctomundo...and IIRC the LSA can, and will, invite you to leave his/her car at their disgression. The diner is just that; a place to eat.I've seen it both ways but when the tables are set up for breakfast, with table cloths, I doubt you'll be welcome with open arms.

Yes Tom, I've seen a few people scratching their heads at BOS with the fill-in tix that aren't worth the paper their printed on. Kinda reminds me of the Airtrain fare hassle at EWR; NJT had free kids day but when we got off we had to pony up the fare for the kiddos to ride the Airtrain~ talk...

When Amtrak was born there were many ex-airline people running the show. If one booked a sleeper from NOL to Lafayette it was blocked all the way to LAX. This went on for quite some time until someone told the reservations centers that this was not an airline. I was both the benefactor and...
