According to trainorders todays TE#21 had it's ONE and ONLY Engine Crap out Noirth of McGregor in 104 Degree Heat! It was rescued and towed to TPL by BNSF Freight Engine. Pax were Bustituted to Points South, accoprding to a post they were Running 4 Hours late into the Stops on the way to SAS! There were Kudoos to the Conductors and the OBS with the Exception of the LSA in the Lounge who told pax asking for Ice and Water that they were not allowed to work when the power was off!

With the current Heat Wave and Drought Blanketing Texas and the SW,hope this doesnt become a common occurence!!! :help:

This only emphasizes my prediction for a lousy summer operationally speaking. I'm sorry Jim can't make his turns but I wouldn't want to be stuck in bum diddely because of an overworked unit. Amtrak has been rolling the dice too long with one unit LD trains. Now, what kind of equipment is Chicago going to throw together to send the City to NOL ???

Wow, that's a scary thought. The local news here has a lot of people freaked out because they did a story on "IN THE EXTREME HEAT YOUR CAR TIRES ARE MORE PRONE TO BLOWING OUT!!!"

I guess the answer is, just stay home?

(I really hope that was an isolated incident; I'm scheduled to take the TE22 in about 10 days. And it's not gonna be ANY cooler then.)

Amtrak has had on/off trouble with the Diesel Engines on the LD Trains in extreme Cold and Heat as they roll up millions of miles!! The Eagles only use One Engine, so when a Rescue Freight engine finally shows up there is going to be loss of time, probably no juice for the ac/lights/diner/cafe etc. till a protect engine (if available??)is hooked up! Some people may disagree but at least it broke down in Civilization, not in the wilds of the Ozarks up in Arkansas or Missourri in the middle of the night! The heat wave seems to be almost everywhere, even up North where all the Flooding has been going on the temps are Triple Digits!

Chances are youll be OK, I do wish the Eagles were run with Two Engines!!!

I noticed today as I rode over the Durango overpass that those 2 'protect' Superliners (or whatever Alan calls them) WERE NOT THERE AT SAS STATION. This is the first time I have noticed that in at least a year.

I think I've occasionally seen two engines on, but I think one was being deadheaded back to another location, or whatever the term was.

I was once - years and years ago - on an LD trip where the a/c failed. NOT FUN AT ALL.

Guess I'll tote extra water and snacks this upcoming trip just in case. And maybe a minibooklight so I can read. Hey, if I go prepared, that should mean nothing bad happens, right? ;)

You are correct, occasionally youll see two engines on the Eagle, usually they are being repositioned,(once there were several PV cars on #22 and we had two engines all the way to CHI!!) there is usually a protect engine kept in Ft. Worth, not sure about SAS??? :help: And Be Prepared is not just for Scouts, it's a good policy for any form of travel!! ^_^

Given the trouble they seem to have with one engine in the summer, they'd probably like to. My guess is that they may not have a free engine right now, so maybe if they get more engines in the future they will. But I have no idea if there are even plans at this time for a purchase of diesel-electrics, let alone one above and beyond replacements for damaged or retiring units. Does anyone know anything on this?
