How do feel about riding "Coach" ?

Yes, I think they should warmly welcome coach passengers in the dining car rather than treat them as an afterthought. More volume in the diner should be a good thing if they manage it correctly. When I travel in coach I always try for dinner in the dining car, but even when we were allowed...

I'm still here (trip from Denver to Orlando)

Thank you for posting. Many of us here were wondering if you and your husband were able to make the trip and get to Florida. Glad that (other than the unexpected evening in Chicago) you both made it without any major issues. Enjoy your new home!!

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

Yes, the bathrooms are certainly a problem. I like riding trains, so I hold my nose, squint my eyes and put up with them. But I have to admit that the bathrooms prevent me from recommending Amtrak to many of my friends and relatives. Apparently the resulting lack of business hasn't...

    Trip Report Word Count

Now I'm kind of torn - between looking at the travelogue section or avoiding it ;>)

I can see (name of train) from my window/porch/etc.

I can barely see it! I live in downtown Boulder with an excellent view of the foothills to the SouthEast. If you know where and when to look, you can catch a brief glimpse of the Zephyr as it winds its way up/down the mountains on its way from/to Denver. It is perhaps 7 miles away and binocs...

    Observation Car seat etiquette

You can probably get away with that 90% of the time. I do that when it's just a quick trip to the john or to get coffee. But, I always tell someone else sitting nearby where I'm going so they can explain the situation to anyone wanting the seat. Happy Travels

    More Questions: DEN to ORL

It has been some time since your scheduled trip, snljamie, and I'm wondering how it went. Probably others here are also curious. As I recall, it was to be some sort of permanent relocation for you and your husband. If so, I can certainly understand how you might not have had time yet to do a...

    Real story on observation car...

As stated by others, if you are alone you will probably have lots of time in the observation car and see lots of things. I've never had an issue getting a single seat if I watch and wait for 10 minutes or so for one to be vacated. If you are traveling with a partner, just decide ahead of time...

Questions (Amtrak vs Greyhound, DEN to ORL)?

If you don't mind posting, OP, what is your scheduled departure date from Denver?

Questions (Amtrak vs Greyhound, DEN to ORL)?

Not sure what day you depart, but no major snow predicted for Denver for at least the next 10 days or so. But you could experience a departure delay if the Zephyr encounters heavy snow in the mountains between CA and Denver. Complete cancellation of your train is unlikely, however. The...

Questions (Amtrak vs Greyhound, DEN to ORL)?

Yes, with your short layovers (IF your arriving trains are close to on schedule), I'd suggest staying in the stations. I'd be more concerned with making the connection. But if you don't, then you will have an entire day to explore Chicago / WDC. Let's hope for the former.

Expert Advice Please (re Thanksgiving travel)

Just my opinion, but given your description of the conditions of you and your husband, I think that this will be a really really long and uncomfortable trip for both of you in coach. If the HC bedroom really won't work for you, I'd suggest reconsidering either flying or hiring a car.

    The California Zephyr

I assume you will be going to Chicago? You didn't mention the time of your trip, but if it will be later this year, you will have diminishing daylight. It will be dark when you leave Denver and no light until you are in Iowa. So the scenery will be Iowa and Illinois, much of which you may...

Is the lounge car important to you or your trip?

I would not use Amtrak if the lounge car goes away. All of my Amtrak travel has been via coach on SuperLiners. Sleep in my coach seat, of course, but other than sleeping typically spend 80% of my time in Lounge car or Dining car and only 20% in my seat.

    Waffle House hop off?

How about just simulating the Waffle House experience by spilling some syrup on the floor of your roomette? ;>)

What should go into an Amtrak LD care package?

As others are saying, be considerate of other coach passengers and keep your in-seat dining simple. You will have access to an electrical outlet, but it is intended for low power devices such as electronics, chargers, etc. No heaters, cookers or hair dryers ;>) The good news is that...

Denver Union Station to Denver Airport Questions

Jebr's advice and questions are right on! The A line train to the airport is excellent and runs every 15 minutes or so. Less than 5 minute walk from detraining the Zephyr. If you are 65 or older, the fare is half. Nice airport and big new Westin hotel there, but you will have much more...

Ottumwa, Osceola or Mt Pleasant long term parking.

In all three cases, we are talking about "small town" Iowa. Having not lived in Iowa for 55 years now, I don't have exact knowledge of which would be better. But I am fairly certain that if you reach out to local residents and authorities you will be able to find a safe place to park - maybe...

Tips for a Amtrak Coach newbie

It's a restaurant specializing in breakfast, brunch and lunch. They do serve alcohol, but limited items and probably 80% of their clientele stick with water, coffee, etc. Located right inside Union Station about 100 ft from the tracks. I've always had positive experiences with the food -...
