    Crescent Status?

As I remember, I believe there's a wye where the KCS Meridian Speedway merges with the NS from NOLA, just east of the I-59 overpass and west of the main Meridian yard.

    Crescent Status?

Reported by NS. Aug 19, 2021 Service has been restored to the mainline near Meridian, MS following the intermodal train derailment reported yesterday, Wednesday, August 18th. While the route is now open, minor delays should be expected on traffic moving through the derailment site. Customers...

    Crescent Status?

Thanks. Yesterday's 20 terminated at Meridian and 19 at Birmingham, IIRC. I wonder how the two consists were returned to NOL and ATL. ATK usually runs the Crescent's engines elephant style. So they would have have to be reversed on a wye or borrow NS engines to pull them back to NOL and ATL. I...

    Crescent Status?

What has happened on the Crescent's route? Amtrak train status has been unavailable for both 19 and 20 since yesterday afternoon. Thanks.

Why aren't overnight trains able to compete with flying?

I realize that my experience may be rare, if not unique. Before I retired I routinely rode the Crescent between Slidell, LA and Alexandria, VA for meetings. I'd depart SDL on #20 at 8:00 AM and arrive ALX at 9:00 AM the next morning. A quick Metro to the office in Arlington for 10:00 meetings...

Crescent schedule change - first time in 50 years!

My worst on #19 was 12 hours down into Hattiesburg (HBG). We were already 5 hours down about 5 miles out of Meridian, where we were held for 7 hours while NS fueled 3 freight locomotive consists of 4 engines each at the Meridian platform. That is more than 30,000 gallons requiring many...

Amtrak Lounges - Priority Pass Access

I was a bi-monthly business traveler on 19/20 from 1988 until 1998 when I retired. Then semi-yearly until the pandemic. I'd estimate there was a high percentage of "business" travelers in the WAS lounge every time I was there. They were recognizable by their non-concern for the surroundings or...

    New Southern Belle

When CN purchased IC, the initial logo was CN/IC or CNIC. But that didn't last long. The logo on locomotives, new rolling stock, and correspondence is now merely CN.

Any currently operated one or two car Amtrak trains around?

Nothing to do with Amtrak or this topic, but you reminded me of my ride in a New York Central RDC-1 in 1952. It ran between Albany, NY and North Adams, MA. All pax except me got off in Pittsfield, MA. The motorman invited me to stand beside him for the 40+/- miles to North Adams. During that run...

The following was published today in the Sun Herald, MS Coast's newspaper.

Amtrak saving time refueling when running late?

The opposite happened to me several years ago. The southbound Crescent (20) was already a several hours late approaching MEI due to congestion out of ATL. We then were held a few miles east of MEI for nearly four hours while three freight locomotive groups of four locos each were fueled at the...

Restoration of New Orleans - Mobile - Jacksonville Gulf Coast Service

The Amtrak Gulf Coast Limited, 2nd iteration, initial run was June 27, 1996. It started with two coaches because Amtrak, like you, assumed ridership would be very poor. However, by Christmas that year, Amtrak had increased the consist to five coaches because of demand. Believe me, they were...

    Covid will dictate the future

Fellow AU members, what I'm about post will disturb many, if not most, but I will post it anyway. I am a pragmatist, a subscriber to Darwin's theory of survival. COVID-19 is one more attempt by nature to cull our species of their various mutations that are, or should be incapable of surviving in...

Alton Brown went on an Amtrak Rant ...

I agree with all the positive comments and recommendations to have Alton Brown as an advocate for Amtrak dining. However that doesn't change the fact that Amtrak, including its President are at the whim of Congress. With the exception of Joe Biden when he was a Senator, virtually every member of...

    Booking Error ID: 535S

Thanks Bill, I went back as you suggested. Lo and Behold, success. I can only imagine that New Year's Eve partying had begun early within the reservations computer. So it took a little while for the self-check module to respond to error interrupts. However, All's Well That Ends Well. Thanks...

    Booking Error ID: 535S

I'm attempting to book a round trip on 19/20 for next May and received Error ID: 535S. I suspect it's because I'm booking in 2019 for travel in 2020. It also could be that new schedules are planned for issue before May, but haven't been finalized yet. Anybody run into this before? Thanks.

    Mississippi/Alabama Service Revival?

Has there been any further information on restoring service to the central Gulf Coast, New Orleans-Mobile? There was a recent article in our local paper that Bay St. Louis, MS was rehabbing their depot for renewed service. I thought this strange, if not premature. Our congressional delegation...

Crescent - Why so bad south of Atlanta

The scheduling nightmare for the Crescent in the MEI/BHM corridor began when KCS and NS jointly upgraded the Meridian Speedway between Shreveport and Meridian. This provided a route to avoid going through New Orleans or Memphis. Prior to that time my trips on the Crescent were usually on time...

    2019 Schedules?

Thanks for an experienced reply. I'll add overnights as CYA. Actually, I've never been to Seattle, Chicago has much that's fascinating, and New York has changed alot since I lived there 65+ years ago. After all, it's a bucket list, so I'll go with the flow.
