Train from Galesburg to Los Angeles questions

The Blue Line subway runs from downtown LA to Long Beach; it does not run to San Pedro, though Long Beach and San Pedro are adjacent. There is probably a Metro or Long Beach Transit bus running between Long Beach and San Pedro, though you would do better to take either the Thruway or a Metro bus...

    Amtrak vs. Airlines:

Actually, it's both more and less outrageous than this. According to The Times (of London): "Of 2,300 controllers, ten were paid between €810,000 (£725,000) and €900,000 last year. A further 226 were paid between €450,000 and €540,000 and 701 were paid between €270,000 and €360,000. The...

Anyone know if the cafe charges for the hot water? (Serious question)

    Street Running

I seem to recall some discussion on this board a few months ago about the old Pioneer street running in Fort Collins, Colorado, and whether a revived Pioneer would do the same thing.

I think Nelson Canyon is at night both directions.

    Southwest Chief 4 dinner question

I was on the SWC out of LAX a few weeks ago. Yes, dinner is served to those boarding at LAX and I think Fullerton. Soon after leaving, the dining car attendant comes through the train -- sleepers first, then coach -- taking dinner reservations.

    California Zephyr hits car? LNK

And 136 passengers are now delayed for hours because the idiot wanted to save 2 minutes of time by going around the crossing arm.

    Question About Lighters

Will not be a problem as long as you remove the fuel. The Amtrak website lists prohibited items as including "Incendiaries, including flammable gases, liquids and fuels", which would seem to include the fuels in the lighters. But remove the fuel and you'll be fine.

    Flat Iron Seaks

I think that calling it "Dinty Moore" is a little cruel! LOL. I had the pot roast version on the Southwest Chief last night from LMY to LAX and thought that it was quite good -- tasty and tender. Don't expect a steak, but rather a very good pot roast.

Can I get from San Francisco to El Paso on the train?

To avoid the bus from SF to Oakland, you could take Cal Train from SF to San Jose and catch the Coast Starlight there.

Most unusual abbreviation for an Amtrak station

Actually the Cincinnati airport is across the river in Kentucky, and closer to Covington than to Kentucky. The actual name of the airport is something like the Cincinnati - Northern Kentucky Airport.

Dinah won't U blow yur horn

I believe (but not certain) that while some cities have tried to ban train horns, the Federal Railroad Administration has sued and won in court on the basis of federal preemption -- that is, that the federal rules and regulations for operating trains override any state or local laws on the subject.

Day trip on the Coast Starlight - questions

The other area that could be used is the ticketing concourse, just to the left as entering LAX from the Alameda side. But like the Harvey House, it's probably too lucrative from renting out for private parties and for filming to use for a lounge. As for how to entertain a 6 year old while...

    Largest cities without Amtrak service?

I think Houston would be the largest city without DAILY Amtrak service (unless you want to count Thruway). SL is 3 times a week.

    Space in Superliner Roomette

Has anyone measured the height of the space under the lower bunk in a superliner roomette? I've read that "flat" bags work best, but that doesn't tell me much. Thanks.

    Today's SWC

There was indeed a crash of an Amtrak train "traveling from Chicago to California" (no word if CZ or Southwest Chief) and a car, killing the occupants of the car. The Chicago Sun Times report is at ==: http://tinyurl.com/kwq8qy

WiFi access on TE/SL from Tucson

This is off your question, but I'm wondering what the Tucson station is like at 1 am or whenever the train arrives from LA. I've been tempted to take the train from LA to TUC, but that late night / early morning time has put me off. Is it safe? Are taxis avaliable at that hour?

    nervous

As I will soon be taking my first Amtrak trip in 30 years, and like Heather will be in coach, I would like to ask two questions that might also be of interest to Heather. First, does one just pick an empty seat in coach and sit down? or does the car attendant escort you to a seat? Second, how...

    CA Zephyr detours this summer?

We are taking the CZ 5 from Reno to Emeryville during the detour period, so it sounds from the above that we should not expect the detour to cause any delays for our leg of the trip. Agreed?
