Quick question about lighters, I am moving from the west coast to the east coast, and taking a train.

If I bring my gold cigar lighters will they be confiscated?

I don't want to lose them, as they are worth about $2,000, and I do not want to send them in the mail unless I have to.

Anyone know if lighters can be carried on board?

thank you.

Will not be a problem as long as you remove the fuel. The Amtrak website lists prohibited items as including "Incendiaries, including flammable gases, liquids and fuels", which would seem to include the fuels in the lighters. But remove the fuel and you'll be fine.

Are they the kind that are like blowtorches?

If they are, I don't think you are supposed to carry them with you onboard the train.

If you are concerned about it, you could pack them in checked baggage empty of fuel.

I bought a regular lighter for our train trips, but this last time I brought my windproof one, & no one said anything.

One of the great things about train travel is that there is no "Security" to go thru. :) So you don't have to worry about bringing lighters, nail clippers, liquids more than 3 ounces, all liquids put inside a quart sized bag, etc, etc, etc on board!

Some things are prohibited, but lighters are not one of them! ;) (After all - the train makes "Smoke Stops". It is kind of hard to smoke if you can't light up! )

Yeah but then the 50 people that hop off and light up during a smoke stop would be arrested.

The policy on Amtrak's website is somewhat condensed, cigarette lighters are, at the very least, permitted.

May be a dumb question - but I'm flabbergasted at the idea of a lighter being worth $2,000. Are they solid gold?

Thank you to all that answered and helped reinforce my suspicions.

I read the list of prohibited items, but it seemed a little vague.

I did not know the train made smoke stops. I will be sure to bring some smaller cigars and a pipe.

While there are lighters made of solid gold, (they typically cost more than 2,000) these are made of palladium, silver and thick gold plate.

there are three of them, a French ST dupont Ligne 2 Black Chinese Lacquer and Gold lighter that I paid 1,000 for and 2 English dunhill rollgas lighters in gold and palladium worth $500 each.

Think jewelery for cigar smokers. :)

Wow!

While you certainly may be asked questions during a smoke stop if someone sees your lighter, rest assured those questions will only be of the "that's amazing, where did you get that?!" sort, not of the "you shouldn't have that" sort. There are always a few dozen (at least) smokers stepping off at the smoke stops (generally every several hours, unless the train is running behind schedule in which case they are abbreviated stops with no time for smoking) plus many non-smoking passengers like to get off just to wander around a bit.

There's absolutely no problem with carrying lighters, or with smoking your cigars or pipes while off the train. Just don't light up on the train -- that's against the law, just like on airplanes.

Since it sounds like you'll be getting off at these stops, the one common-sense warning: never leave the train platform or wander far from the train, and be sure to board promptly when the train crew tells you to, lest you be left behind!
