Amtrak wins takeover of Washington Union Station

If Amtrak can make money on renting out spaces then great but if they break even that is OK as well. Better station services will attract riders. I am not sure I want the store fronts to be loss-leaders but breaking even is fine with me. Not a coffee drinker but Starbucks is popular and...

Interesting facts and notes in old railroad magazines

Starting around 1960 Trains started listing top speeds on rail lines. Interesting to see those numbers. I am skimming the June 1966 as I type this. I should have mentioned this the first time the list was published. Given the legal complaint against NS re: Crescent it is worth noting the old...

BRS, Blue Ridge Southern. I mistyped and their reporting mark is BLU. Freight only Watco-owned shortline that has two segments coming out of Asheville. One segment heads towards Saluda and the other segment heads towards Dillsboro. GSMR has not had any freight in 20 years I have heard but...

Modified Amtrak service due to Hurricane Helene

My thought is that the state my get to come in to help rebuild the line and use that as leverage and get Amtrak to Asheville quicker as a way to pump money into the mountains. That will be needed. Of course, the flip side of this is that if the state helps with rebuilding the line that money...

Modified Amtrak service due to Hurricane Helene

I have seen some pictures of the Salisbury-Asheville "AS" line. Some of the pictures are on the west side of Asheville heading to TN. But some of the pictures are on the part of the line that would be used for Amtrak service to Asheville. Washouts can be fixed. But the cost is a concern for a...

    Status of railroad employees

Correct on all of that from what I know as well. FEC is SMART and was UTU before the merger of UTU and Sheetmetal Workers Union. I am sure many are aware of the FEC and organized labor history. It was contentious to say the least. I want to say UTU reorganized FEC in 1996 after a few decades...

    Status of railroad employees

Commuter and light rail do not fall under RLA or RRB from my understanding and I think maybe Brightline used that to get out of the more expensive RRB stuff. I think Brightline was arguing they are more like an interurban than a traditional railroad.
