New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

I'm still of the crowd that believes they should just bring back separate east and west coast sections. If you aren't gonna bring back the pre-94 routing on the S-Line, split the Meteor in Auburndale, otherwise split it at Jacksonville. With Brightline now serving Orlando-Miami, I would think...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

I've noticed that people seem to already be dooming about how a combined train is going to "destroy OTP" for both routes, but honestly I'm not so sure. CSX has consistently been these days the only Class I that I've seen actually try and keep Amtrak generally on time, and I think that has a lot...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

The page for the Floridian is live on Amtrak’s website. They say that it is indeed a temporary combo of the Cap and Star in order to facilitate work on the East River Tunnels.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

I never said it would be soon. But with the LD study wrapping up, they’ll almost certainly place a Chicago-Miami train via Louisville-Nashville-Chattanooga-Atlanta-Jacksonville as a priority (I’d be surprised if they don’t), and if they can get that started then the current Floridian would be...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

My theory is that this will be a temporary thing until they can sort out the equipment issues, and then possibly getting the actual Floridian running via Atlanta. After that, the Cap and Star will come back. Either way, this is very interesting to see from my perspective, as Amtrak hasn't added...

    P42 Phase VII Repaint Status

I wonder if they'll start with the VL1s when making the jump to Phase VII equipment. To my knowledge, they have overhauls scheduled starting in October, and it would be a perfect time to repaint them. The Phase VI (or IVb) is getting tired from what I've seen on the Silvers as of late.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Can someone catch me up on why people think the Star is getting truncated to Washington please, and for how long? I don't understand why Amtrak would cut themselves back from 2 NY-FL trains to just one.

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion Q4 2023 - 2024 H1

Do you know if there are still plans to add a permanent fourth sleeper and permanent third sleeper to the Meteor and Star respectively in the future? Obviously with ~15 VL1's out of service they wouldn't do that for a while, but I heard that was the original plan with the VL2 order.

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion Q4 2023 - 2024 H1

Does anyone know when the Silvers are going to get their 4th coach and (in the case of the Meteor) 3rd sleeper back? Surely restoring them to their pre-Covid consists would boost ridership.

According to this article, coach passengers finally got dining car access on the Silver Services.

    Amtrak Phase VII livery discussion

Well, however they choose to apply Phase VII to the older equipment, it’s sure to be a radical departure from the status quo, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion Q4 2023 - 2024 H1

I still think it’s an absolute shame that the VL1 refurbishment program to bring them pretty much completely in line with the VL2 design was canceled, as the above photo is evidence of how nice it would have been.

FRA Long Distance Service Study discussion

Of note I think is the proposal on page 157 to establish a “Long Distance Public Committee” and analysis of the network every 5 years for improvement. These would do wonders for even the current network without expansion.

200MPH+ on the NEC: Is it practical?

No one has mentioned it (though it may not even be a problem), but what about the different power systems? North of New Haven is newer ~25 year old catenary built to 60hz standards, but south of NH is much older (~90 year old) catenary built to 25hz standards. Does the older catenary/power...

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion Q4 2023 - 2024 H1

I’ve noticed that as of late, it’s really a gamble whether the Meteor will have a VL2 or not… I wonder why? (ignoring the obvious answer of equipment availability) Furthermore, at some point it went back down again from 4 coaches to 3, and still hasn’t regained its 3rd sleeper. I guess Hialeah...

Superliner trains' removal and restoration of cars (2022-2023)

This is great news. I assume that the 7 will be used to finally re-equip the CL and TE, as IIRC the CL uses 3 trainsets and the TE uses 4.

    Amtrak in Florida

Well, seeing how the "infrastructure" that was removed was literally just a car wash, I don't think it would be exuberantly expensive to put one back. Furthermore, there's a small 7 track yard just to the south of TUS that CSX uses to serve only one customer. I don't think it would be impossible...
