Red Cap cart falls on track and passengers at Union Station in Chicago

There is the amount and then there’s the pound of flesh. This is a made-for-TV-news event.

Red Cap cart falls on track and passengers at Union Station in Chicago

Yup, that’s all that should be required of sensible people. Show them the video and say, don’t do this. Perhaps a solution is to not use motorised vehicles. They’re heavy and go faster than is safe for that environment. I have also seen them transporting people who were perfectly mobile...

UP intermodal hits lowrider and derails, killing one

If so that makes it all the more needless and tragic.

UP intermodal hits lowrider and derails, killing one

The gate was down, sitting on top of the cargo (conduit or something like that?), and the lights were flashing so the truck had to have entered on to the tracks after the lights went on. Transporting an oversized load would/should require a driver of more than average experience, as well as the...

Red Cap cart falls on track and passengers at Union Station in Chicago

Right. It was bound to happen some time. It’s a wonder it doesn’t happen more often. The suggestion to widen the platforms would reduce the capacity of the station by requiring the removal of some tracks, wouldn’t it? And it wouldn’t prevent carelessness. But all hell will break loose now...

    Phase VII car repaint status

Yes, the marketing value/customer reaction is in the aesthetics of a complete consist. What continues to bother me is the mismatch in height between cars and engines. I understand the march of progress and all but it looks like somebody bought the wrong parts. 🤔

Fort Worth to Los Angeles bad service

“Not knowing the facts” almost dismisses the rude, unprofessional behaviour. As if it’s OK to be rude in some circumstances. It’s not. Public facing jobs have their challenges because the public, meaning certain individuals, can be very trying. Customer service training is all about dealing...

    Public transport to Airports

Yes, that’s what I was thinking of. My flight is scheduled to arrive at 7:45 pm and the last bus is 9:30, so I was wondering if I should worry. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Thank you.

    Public transport to Airports

Has anyone had experience at O’Hare getting to the transit centre where the Coach USA buses depart? I have to do that next month and won’t have a lot of time to make a connection to the last bus to Milwaukee. Thanks.

My USA trip 2024 (part 1)

“Why are you entering the U.S.” of a U.S. citizen has to be the silliest question I’ve ever heard. I would have been tempted to say “I’m beginning to ask myself the same question.” The strangest question I was ever asked was where and when did you buy your suitcase? I said the truth - I don’t...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Spoke too soon. Just now underway.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Sitting on the 41 now, bound for PIT. Left Chicago on time, went 500 metres and stopped. Supposedly a “computer issue.” I have a half bottle of a decent Chardonnay and two seats to myself, so far. I’m not in a hurry but I’d rather be moving since that’s the nice part of trains.

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago Corridor service H2 2024

Yes, that’s right. Thanks for the correction. But with up to 26 possible stops between Kenosha and downtown it seems like walking speed. It works OK for the shorter runs as you say and I would expect that’s typical of ridership until the nearer stations such as from Evanston on down when it is...

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago Corridor service H2 2024

Extending Metra to Milwaukee has been studied several times, most recently in the 2000’s, which I participated in. There are a number of problems. One of them is that it isn’t a practical Milwaukee to Chicago option. Metra has many many stops and a Milwaukee extension would add more. Already...

North East Corridor (NEC) speeds, new stations and state of repair

Rule of thumb for construction used to be about 15% of total for design, give or take. That may no longer be the case, or this kind of project isn’t comparable to that, but what is $190 million 15% of? It’s too late to do math. 😵‍💫

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Thanks for your replies. It’s all as I thought but I am extremely risk averse about this particular trip as the return leg, ultimately to Milwaukee, would be on November 30th. Considerations: 1. First time on this train. 2. Weather could be a factor, per usual at thanksgiving. 3. I usually...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

I'm glad you put this up. It's confusing. I am contemplating/preferring to use the Floridian originating at ORD - PIT (sorry, all I know is IATA codes) for Thanksgiving travel. But according to the transitdocs map it only returns to Toledo. I'd like to say this can't be right, Toledo is a...

    Happy to be here

Thanks for approving me as a member of the forum. You can read about me in my profile. (That’s my idea of brief. Sorry. 😄). But in a nutshell, grew up on the Philadelphia Main Line, rode PRR back and forth to Pittsburgh with my mother many times. It was generally not a good experience. I...

Suggestions needed for international rail trip

Keep Australia on your list. I lived in New Zealand for 15 years - this is not a non-sequitor - and had the pleasure of riding the Ghan in Australia just before lockdown. The Ghan is three nights Darwin to Adelaide. (Engine in my photo. Better looking than the old guy blocking the view.)...
