Assuming the trains are on schedule/

I'll be arriving on the CZ mid-afternoon and departing about mid-night on the CS.

Is there anything worthwhile close to the SAC station as a venue to kill some time ?

A decent Mexican food restaurant for a nice leisurly would be nice.

First off, the CZ (5) may be late, so that may shorten your layover. For example, it isn't supposed to arrive until 5:30 today. The CS tends to run closer to on time.

The said, the two best bets are the California Train Museum and Old Sacremento. Both are pretty close walking distance to the station. Old Sacremento looks to have a couple of mexican restuarants. The area is a little touristy.

What I prefer is = to take the CZ on to EMY (this gives me more train time & less layover) Also there is a Mall on the other side of the tracks ( walk over bridge ) from the station that has many food options and a theater to kill some time!

Have Fun

The rail museum unfortunately closes @ 5pm and if the Zephyr is late you won't have time to see it properly even though it is next to the Station!

The Sacramento Station is being remodeled and isn't a fun place to wait ( no AC and it gets HOT! in SAC)

Id consider hoping on a Cali Corridor Train (Trains every hour) and ride to the charming College town of Davis 20 minutes away( first stop west of SAC on the way to Emeryville), plenty of good eating and drinking joints around the pretty old SP Station abd nice walking area! A Coach ticket is cheap for this run and if you're AGR you'll get Points too!

You can take the 9:52pm Corridor Train back to SAC and be there by 10:30pm, (the Starlight usually is late into Sacramento arriving after Midnight!)

Thank you all for the advice.

I changed my trip plans, electing to only use the train for the return portion of my trip.
