Dave,

The Amtrak code for Kingston, RI is KIN.

What is the airport code?
I doubt Dave knows if Kingston even has an airport except for the station platform when the Acela goes whizzing by.

Dave,

EWR is the airport code for Newark, NJ.

What is the Amtrak code?
There are two:

EWR for the airport station;

NWK for (Newark) Penn station.

While there are a lot of Amtrak station codes that coincide with IATA airport codes (see the_traveler's list earlier in this thread), BUR, BWI, and EWR are the only ones I can think of where the two are actually in close proximity (a 5-minute walk, a short shuttle bus ride [iIRC], and a short but pricey airtrain ride, respectively).

PS has no one noticed that the OP (yes, that's an abbreviation! :p ) abbreviated 'et cetera' in the thread title? :D

All Amtrak trains (except trains to Maine) go to South Station. The Maine trains depart only from North Station. And there is over 1 mile between the two stations!
Yep, and if a novice traveler asks for advice and is told to "get off in BBY and take MBTA to BON," it's just going to frustrate him, and probably make him go looking for someplace that's more helpful. "Get off in Back Bay and take the Orange Line to North Station," isn't hard to type at all, and would be the courteous advice for someone who's not a thoroughly hardcore Amtrak traveler.

But like I said, I don't really expect habits here to change. It's unfortunate, though ...
First, in many if not most cases where a novice is asking a question, most people try to avoid using abreviations. Once you've been here a bit, or in topics that the "regular's" are posting in, you get a lot more of the lingo as it were.

But I don't think that it's a matter of trying to belong to the club. It's just easier! Now perhaps erroneously, it's assumed that if you're hanging out here regularly that you'll learn the lingo over time. But at least for most, and certainly for myself, it's just a matter of it being easier.

Finally, any time someone isn't certain, they need only ask. Most members are more than happy to provide a translation.

Perhaps we can level the playing field and have Ryan throw some Navy acronyms at us to see how long it takes for us to figure them out

I don't see what all the repeated fuss is about. Every forum of any significance uses specialized acronyms and jargon from time to time. Amtrak Unlimited is pretty easy to figure out compared to many other forums I've visited. If a user is too lazy to Google new terms or too timid to request additional information then they're probably not ready for Amtrak anyway.

I wasn't thinking specifically of you and I would never, ever call you timid. We've had multiple threads about this and yours just happened to be the one I posted in. Lately people seem to be up in arms over the use of specialized terms and acronyms and I stand by my view that in the age of Google there's really no excuse for expecting everything to be predigested into its most basic form so that it can be spoon-fed to others. I enjoy learning new terms and acronyms and feeling like I'm part of the knowledgeable crowd. I don't understand the desire to make everything in life so easy that you no longer feel the need to do your own research. If you think Amtrak staff are going hold your hand or jump through any hoops you might be sorely disappointed by the reality of the situation. Better to find out now than wait until the day of your trip I would think.

Might the solution to all of these posts and multiple topics regarding abbreviations be to have one topic and have it pinned at the top of the page. It might be easier if someone would take ownership of that topic only and be able to combine posts as needed! As a retired railroader (37 years service) that grew up on the railroad the slang and abbreviations used are sometimes even puzzling to me.
