No. The room is held up to two weeks before departure for anyone who states that they have a disability and need the accessible bedroom (that is all that is required by the ADA). At the two week point, it goes into the general room pool and can be then reserved by anyone if it remains unsold.

What exactly is a "state issued handicap id"? What state issues such a document?

I think Kenneth meant a state issued handicap sticker for the car.

To answer the original question, you could be asked for documentation of your need on board. However, most times you are not asked.

One can be disabled and not own a car. Plenty of seniors in this neck of the woods that would most certainly qualify for the H room that don't have a handicap tag, trust me, many I know haven't driven in decades.

I don't have a handicapped designation on my car and got room H a couple years ago because I use a walker part time (only when I walk long distances, i.e. Chicago and Portland Union Stations, etc.).

We booked the H room for mother in law for this summer, and the agent told us to bring her handicap car placard, or a letter from her Dr to present on board if requested. (Might have been another option or two, cant temember....she'll bring her car placard)

She is mostly paralyzed, and has no right leg, so I doubt they will bother, but to answer the question, yes there are proof if eligibility requirements to book it (unless within 2 weeks, when they open it up for common use)

I suppose each situation is different. I wasn't told to bring any documentation nor was I asked for an ID. All I did when I booked the trip was tell the agent I use a walker and that was enough.

Last year I went on a trip with my mom and she was in H. She uses a cane. Again, same thing with her. Also, just booked one for this summer with her and my sister, using AGR points for their room (my sister is listed as her companion). Again, no mention of her having to bring documentation.

The ADA in most cases uses a scale of proof .

Let me cite the issue with moliltuy devices .

In lay terms . If you have a leg missing Or have a walker Or some other obvious thing with you . then that IS your proof to a extent . but for more hidden things like my nuropathy Often times it is handy to have a hang tag . It Seams to be THE no questions asked document ...

take that as a grain of salt .
