Memorial day weekend. Saturday do something elegant with GF. Sunday morning take dad and sister to O'Hare so they can go to Alaska. Driive home, park the car, go to Union Station. Sleeper on 3 from CHI to ABQ. Arrive AB!Q and then fly home on southwest via Denver getting back at 11:55 p.m. This gets me almost 24 hours on the train and a ride over Raton pass, Glorietta Pass, and Apache canyon. Cost 630 dollars for sleeper and plane fare. Doesn't get much better than this.

And if 3 is late into ABQ . . . stuff happens and I really tried to make that flight . . . Thats why there is sick days.

LOL! I know what you mean. For me, it's the Texas Eagle westbound to Los Angeles, Coast Starlight northbound to Seattle, to visit my son and his family. While I'm there, I'll take the Amtrak Cascades early morning train from Seattle to Vancouver, BC. Spend the day wandering around wherever public transportation will take me, then back to Seattle on the evening train. When it's time to go home, I'll ride the Coast Starlight southbound to SAC, then catch the eastbound Zephyr over the Sierras and Rockies to Galesburg, then transfer to the southbound Texas Eagle. Total cost = $215 + 8000 AGR points. I'm such a die-hard railfan that I travel COACH (gasp!). I think that that trip will hold me over until my trip in July. :p

Oops! I forgot to add the cost of the Vancouver trip: $64 or 2900 points, for round trip.

I love the Vancouver ride. We took a ferry boat Seattle to Victoria. Stayed a night at Empress of India Hotel. Another ferry to Vancouver then Amtrak back to Seattle to fly home. The Indian cab driver in Vancouver, complete with turban, overheard me asking where our voucher was for the cab, the driver slammed on the breaks saying, "voucher voucher you did not tell me you had a voucher, turned the cab around and backtrack several miles to downtown. He was taking us for a ride to jack up to fare!

Seattle to Vancouver is a fabulous trip! I took the early morning train in route to Vancouver and The Canadian and loved it. Vancouver is worth the trip alone. What a beautiful and fun city!
