Hi,

My elderly parents (they live in Japan) are interested in cross country trip on AmTrak, and they want their son (me) to join them (because their English is limited). As a good son, I would be delighted, but I would like to ask questions to travel expert on this forum.

We have done a similar trip about 10 years ago from LA to SF, and I remember that three of us stayed in a sleeping room (two beds).

When I try to reserve a room on AmTrak website, it tells me that I need to have two rooms for 3 people. Is that really true? I don't mean to be cheap, but my parents are tiny people, and they can share a bed. It seems like a waste of money to get two rooms.

Does anyone know if three people can stay in one room?

Thanks in advance.

Atsushi

Welcome!

It is true that you can not book 3 into a sleeper ON THE WEBSITE, it is possible to do IF YOU CALL 1-800-USA-RAIL! The agent must make you aware that there are only 2 berths, but once you acknowledge it, they can book it for you! ;)

However..........If your funds allow it, you will be MUCH MORE comfortable if you purchase TWO BEDROOMS, directly next to each other, and have the partition between the two rooms removed. I believe this is called a Bedroom Deluxe. You will have spacious room, plenty of seating, and not ever feel cramped.

It's only money.................

It's called a Bedroom Suite.

What we now call just a Bedroom, used to be called the Deluxe room. No doubt that's where your remembering the deluxe from.

I would also recommend that at least you also join Amtrak Guest Rewards before your trip. (I would recommend they do also, but they need a US address - they could use your's! ;) ) I would be glad to recommend all of you! That way you get a higher sign-up bonus. Just send me a PM (Private Message) with your emails (each account needs a separate email address) before June 30.
