Albuquerque hotels

Just for a dose of overnight train travel after a bit of a dry spell I'm thinking of taking the SW Chief west to Albuquerque from Kansas and back again after a day or so.

For overnight accommodations I usually try to find unique historical hotels that have some individual character and charm about them - and they're usually in a city's downtown area - sometimes they could be described as 'boutique' hotels. And the right hotel may or may not have a fine general American restaurant and lounge with a killer jazz cocktail pianist - those amenities would simply be bonuses.

I have nothing at all against chain hotels - and it's very possible in a particular city a hotel with a national flag could indeed be a great choice.

I know nothing about hotels accommodations in Albuquerque and would be interested in recommendations.

These are my favorite historic hotels:

Hotel Albuquerque - in Old Town, so you can walk around and explore pretty easily.

Hotel Andaluz - about 1.5 miles from Old Town, but it's only a block or so from the train station.

Parq Central Hotel - it started as a hospital for the railway company, and then it became a children's psychiatric hospital. It was abandoned for years before its recent conversion to a hotel.

Casas de Suenos - if you want an authentic, traditional feel, you can book one of their "casitas".

You might consider spending the night here, instead of Albuquerque, if it would work out for you...either via a shuttle from Lamy, or Rail Runner from ABQ...haven't researched the connections..

La Fonda is a fantastic hotel; I've stayed there three times. It has almost everything on your wish list: Central downtown location with activities nearby; good restaurants both in the hotel and in the vicinity; a bar which often features live music (although probably a mariachi band instead of piano); quirky, unique architecture; plus a swimming pool w/Jacuzzi and the "Bell Tower Bar" which is a great place to relax and watch the sun set. You can either get off at Albuquerque and take the Rail Runner or else stay on the train to Lamy and take the shuttle van. It can be pricy...very pricy...but since it's independent sometimes you can do quite well by calling the hotel directly, asking for a manager, and saying that you've heard good things about their hotel and that you'd like to try it but that you haven't yet found any rates which fit your budget. No guarantees, but...it worked for me!

I have stayed at both the Andaluz and Parq Central and can recommend both.

On a weekend, the Andaluz is walking distance to central where you can sit at the NY pizza place in the evening and enjoy a fantastic "show" of low riders and other odd vehicles driving by. Superb!

As to Parq Central, they are a little further but provide free transportation to and from the station. They are right on Central so you can catch the 66 bus to Old Town. Note, Andaluz is a short walk to the 66 bus stop also.

My wife and I stayed at the Rt. 66 Hostel on Central Avenue a few years ago. The room was painted pepto-pink but at least it had an en-suite bathroom. The bed was comfy. It is within walking distance from the Amtrak/Greyhound station.
