Woke up at the wee crack of dawn to realize that mother's little sinus infection had become a larger sinus infection. Since it was her first time in Boston she still wanted to go sightseeing later on so we made the decision that she should skip the shop tour and rest up in order to be ready for what was to come later.
The shop tour was rather informative and we had a great group. First we went trackside and saw the underbelly of the trainset as well as the bogies, the air bags, and everything you could only see elsewhere if you made the decision to take a trip under the NEC. After that the group went up in to the cab and took some photos.
Here's Patrick enjoying the fireman's seat:
On the way out of the yard we received some goodie bags that marketing had cooked up including a deck of Acela playing cards and a nice Amtrak pen. On the way in to the shop it had been rather overcast but on the way out it was bright and sunny so those of us with cameras were further pleased.
After coming back to the hotel mom and I tried to meet up with Chuljin to go over to the Navy Yards. It was my mom's first time in Boston, I am a naval buff, and he wanted to do some token historical something or other so the Charleston Navy Yards seemed to be the best compromise. We had some problems communicating and setting up the meeting in BOS but Alan was nice enough to lend us his cell phone so that we could coordinate a meeting at the JFK/U Mass stop.
When we got to the Navy Yards we took a brief self-guided tour of both the USS Constitution and the WWII-era destroyer Cassin Young. Here my mom plays with the Cassin Young's big guns:
And here Chuljin stands regally in front of the Constitution, a sailor if I ever saw one:
After finding a cab back to South Station we dropped of Chuljin so he could catch the 4:10 Acela to WAS, during the ride we discussed New York and parted with the promise of seeing each other sometime. This is what I like about these types of gatherings-- you walk in as "friends" and walk out as real friends. A great Gathering, trip report about BOS-CLE tomorrow.
