Well, I agree - it should be easier to find out what the train status is. But, all of the things you mention that could be used What it really boils down to is the customer service reps for Amtrak. If they wanted to go the extra mile to be able to answer customer questions and be able to plan alternate routing for customers.
 
I got caught up in this mess, as I was scheduled to travel on 161, OSB - WAS that Saturday. Through a combination of luck and experience I managed to get onto 99 and get into WAS 'only' 2 and 3/4 hours late. (Which was actually really good considering a trespasser was also struck by a SB train in Sharon, PA that day around 7:00PM, and if I'd of been on a later train, who knows when I'd of gotten home) Anyway, I'll not get into details, but I did want to say that jis accurately describes my experience that day.
