To be able to not 'worry' about losing 12 hours on a trip makes it sound like you have no job or family commitments to take into consideration.
In terms of non work travel as far as I know American's don't get a great deal of holiday either do you? So losing half a day of your holiday would mean more to you.
In my situation as a tourist coming to the US and using Amtrak to go from coast to coast if I was delayed by that long that'd seriously eat into the time I have available in each city.
Luckily enough my main long journey is the California Zephyr so if it's 12 hours late I'll just get into San Francisco at 7am rather than 7pm which isn't so bad, especially as I'll be in a sleeper, but 12 hours on top of the Capitol Limited would lose me nearly all of the free day I have in Chicago.
