Did Hudson News move out since late May?
My mistake. My memory must have been erased by the trauma of not finding that Washington Post the one time I went into the station during the switch. Thanks!

Washington Union and the peaceful park between it and the Senate building are well worth taking a longer layover than just glancing in perilously during the locomotive switch. That's the way to do it. Going down the steep hill to the National Mall is more of a hike, though. And the circulator bus has finally been definitely cancelled. I could never find it. (Seems to be a theme. But I did find the stops, just no bus.) The Metro is great of course, but it's indoors. Museums are free in DC, mostly.

Many neighborhoods, just off the main corridors like H Street, with its streetcar more or less at the station, are quite wonderful to walk in. If you like that sort of thing. Also on the Union Station side of town are Eastern Market and the fine fountain outside the Library of Congress. Poseidon and nymphs. The new version of The Wharf south of Maine Street is not to my liking (very big), but the old dockside boats selling seafood are still in their corner. (They don't sail.) In an odd coincidence, the RPA called me when I was down there, the only time they ever have.

I'd read the H Street Streetcar was perhaps a bad project. The corridor was just becoming hipster, but on the other hand, it runs in one of just two lanes, and the express commuter bus is heavily used and much more important for people in Southeast DC and Maryland. Sure enough on one trip an empty police car was blocking the lane for no apparent reason. In DC you sort of go with the flow, or stop with it in this case. Of course the driver let us off, those of us who wanted to get places. Things get more and more hurried in the cities from Baltimore north, in my experience, though most Northeast cities are charmingly pleasant to walk around in, when you have time. One exception to the peaceful easy feeling of Washington are the very stressed out staffers you see around Capitol Hill and from the train windows going north of Alexandria, as they run on the pedestrian ways. A law degree, low pay and ambition!

It is still there. In fact it appears Starbucks is returning to its old spot as well. They must have gotten a great deal.
If Amtrak can make money on renting out spaces then great but if they break even that is OK as well. Better station services will attract riders. I am not sure I want the store fronts to be loss-leaders but breaking even is fine with me. Not a coffee drinker but Starbucks is popular and hopefully the workers have a union contract as well so there are worse options.

^ No, the plan is to reconstruct the existing Amtrak concourse as a grand Train Hall, reaching down to new concourses underneath the platforms and north towards a new north entrance along H St NE.

We can criticize the mall redevelopment now in retrospect, but the station building was in really dire straits in the early 1980s -- it was shuttered for years because the Main Hall ceiling collapsed! Passenger volumes were tiny then: 2.5M in 1979, vs. 37M in 2019. There wasn't Acela or VRE or even MARC then (though Conrail operated shoestring commuter services), Metro was brand-new, and intercity buses had their own terminals.

Quick coffee options during a loco-switch layover:
- McDonald's near gate L
- Pret a Manger, between gate A and the Red Line north entrance, has grab and go sandwiches, salads, and coffee
- Blue Bottle Coffee facing the Main Hall for pricey espresso drinks
- Dunkin Donuts at the west end of the basement food court
- Starbucks is returning to gate D
- Bullfrog Bagels is a local favorite, coming soon to gate G

There are still occasional delays thru the 1st street tunnel. This is caused by the ongoing rehab and replacement of the interlocking turn outs. Sometimes traffic is limited to just one bore both ways. Cannot find the reference but there are 2 more absolute work windows scheduled next year. Do not believe this had to wait for the takeover by Amtrak except if the work above the interlocking done at same time had to wait for the takeover.

Many posts on Facebook about a new, enclosed ticketed lounge. Somebody said they though it was in what used to be the Uniqlo store. The posted photos didn't show anything in there except for a lot of seats.

Guess with Amtrak now having control of the retail space, they decided to do something useful with it.

The Facebook group is Amtrak Fans, but I don't think it's viewable by non-members.

I cannot confirm that...

But, I can confirm that the Uniqlo store has moved into the larger, former H&M space. I'm no fashionista but once or twice a year I buy black low-rise socks at Uniqlo. Life and laundry are easier when you own only one kind of socks.
