How far is the Angel's flight railway from Union Station in LA? Is it walkable? I am planning on be there on a Sunday. Any other ideas to pass four hours around Union Station?

It isn't walkable. When I was doing a connection from the SWC to CS in LA Whooz took me there, we barely found it, but we did certainly have to take the red line to get there-- I'm pretty sure that's all we needed, I think it was only two or three stops up on the line.

:hi: ALC is correct, take the REDLINE SUBWAY right in Union Station to the Pershing Square Stop Downtown. Phillipes famous Resturant is only Two Blocks from Union Station, Great Breakfasts and French Dip Sandwiches. On the way to Phillpes you will walk through the First Site of LA,Olivera St., sort of a faux Mexican Village worth a look and China Town is behind this. Dont forget to Check Out Beautiful Union Station also, it"s Fantastic!!

I rode it last December. Still an awesome 25 cent ride each way! From Pershing Square, look for modern gold skyscraper. That's the hilltop where Angels Flight is. On the base of Angels Flight, it's Grand Central market that you should explore.

When you exit the subway at Pershing Square station, make sure you take the "exit to 4th Street" stairs to the mezzanine, not the "exit to Pershing Square" stairs. The mezzanine level ends in a T. Walk to the left and take the escalator to ground level. From there you can see Angels Flight and Grand Central Market.

One needn't walk through Placita Olvera to get to Phillipe's. The quickest route to Phillipe's is, in fact, not through the Placita but straight up Alameda St.

If you'd like to go to Placita Olvera, it isn't out of your way per se- but you would have to make the effort. Instead of walking up Alameda, cross the street and you're there.

Personally, my restaurant of choice when I'm in LA is the Spring Street Smokehouse- take Alameda north to Chavez, then west on Chavez to Spring and enjoy delicious barbecue and a constantly rotating selection of craft beer. I am aware, however, that this is blasphemy for this particular forum.

Not blasphemy, and looks like it's pretty much around the block from the Metro Plaza hotel. I'm partial to brisket, and looking forward to giving the joint a try.

I'm curious as to why its not walkable. Google maps shows it as 1.2 miles from LAUS.
Everyone's definition of walking distance is different. I've walked it many times with no issue but others may have a bigger problem with it.

I think this ewas featured on a reality show one season, I want to say biggest loser where they could choose either to walk up and down or take thetrain ok this off topic, I know just thought it was intreasting

Actually, Olvera At. is far from faux.

"Olvera Street is in the oldest part of Downtown Los Angeles, California, and is part of the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument. Many Latinos refer to it as "La Placita Olvera." Circa 1911 it was described as Sonora Town.

Having started as a short lane, Wine Street, it was extended and renamed in honor of Agustín Olvera, a prominent local judge, in 1877. There are 27 historic buildings lining Olvera Street, including the Avila Adobe, the Pelanconi House and the Sepulveda House."

LA was founded right next door in 1781.

It is walkable. I was going to guess about a mile but defer to google maps.

For Someone not Familiar with Downtown LA I suggest they ride the Subway or even take a Cab to Pershing Square! Even though Downtown is being Gentrified, there still are Street Characters and Bad Guys around on the Streets and as Others have said you can Actually have Trouble Finding stuff Downtown if not familiar with it! Be a LA Person, dont Walk, Ride!

Angels Flight operated for almost 70 years without an accident. When it was rebuilt at another site and reopened in 1996 it only lasted until 2001 when the top car got loose and crashed into the car at the bottom and killed one passenger and injured several others. Operations were then suspended for 9 years until it reopened again in 2010. Seems we just can't get anything right that 100 years ago was easy.

When the little funicular railway reopened a year ago, the City's new, 1996 operating "system" had been removed entirely and replaced with a traditional funicular drive system just like the one from 100 years ago. There have been well over a half-million passenger trips taken on the Angels Flight Railway since the March 2010 reopening. Beats walking up (or down) the 189 steps! Still only a quarter each way (but the nonprofit operator reported last November that this is insufficient to "pay the freight" and that fares hikes must be discussed).
