I saw on the news this morning that the VP is to make an announcement at Washington Union Station regarding Amtrak funding as part of the stimulus. If anyone has specifics about this announcement and could post the same it would be appreciated!

I'm not sure if anyone will be carrying the presentation live or not!

Thanks!

It'll probably be covered on C-SPAN at the very least. Kerry will also be there and will give a short speech. If he throws a joke in about the Lake Shore, Starlight, Cardinal, foamers, "reliably unreliable" or AmShacks, you'll have me to thank/blame. ;)

CNN just talked about it. They talked about how Amtrak is getting over 1 billion dollars of YOUR money from the stimulus package. Im pretty sure I also heard them say that freight trains use Amtrak infrastructure, but hopefully its just the cold I have messing with my ears.

I'm finding myself leaving the TV off more often.

1 billion? Sounds good to me. Lets order those bi-levels for the midwest. And start working on getting high speed rail implemented in the midwest.
1.3 billion to be exact.

Standing at Washington, DC’s Union Station, one of the most traveled railway stations in the nation, Vice President Joe Biden announced that Amtrak will receive $1.3 billion in grant funding from the recently enacted American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to expand passenger rail capacity.
Full article here.

Didnt we already know this?
We knew this already, where "we" is "people who follow Amtrak very closely". The general public probably hasn't paid much attention to the details of exactly what's in the stimulus bill, and most of the folks who did know passenger rail was getting stimulus money were probably only aware of the "high-speed" money, and not specifically aware of the 1.3 billion allocated for Amtrak. I think it's great that the stimulus Amtrak funding is getting positive publicity on major cable news coverage!

Does anyone have a list of the 68 cars that are to be rehabilitated at Beech Grove for the 82 million dollars?
I suspect a very large proportion of the 68 cars are Amfleet and hence will likely be rehabed in Bear DE. Beech Grove will probably be working on some number of bi-level Superliners and some Amfleet IIs to offload Bear of those. Just a guess.

It's the headline story on CNN's website now: Biden rolls out $1.3 billion for Amtrak

:) this is good news. I guess Joe Biden just put his money where is mouth is.

From the CNN Article

It is "a necessity for a great nation to have a great [rail] passenger system," Biden said. "I'm tired of apologizing for help for Amtrak. ... It's an absolute national treasure and necessity."

Yes, Its been known for some time. The interesting thing to me is that they've decided to draw general public attention to the plan. Some pretty astute politicians have decided this is an issue they can ride pretty far. the numbers go this way:

1. 8 bil for HSR. Not entirely clear whether they mean track straightening projects or 200+ mph electric trains. President Obama always talks like its true HSR. $2 bil to be spent this next year.

2. 5 bil for "grants to states" I suspect this is rail straightening type projects.

3. 1.35 bil for Amtrak, about doubling its budget.

Five year transportation bill comes up next fall. expectation is that it will have considerably more rail money in it, given the warm reception to the expansion of rail plans so far, and the supposed need for additional stimulus.

Working on new Switching systems in my part of the country is very good. Hopefully, it will mean more ability to expand capacity due to the switching systems.

By switching system are you referring to signal systems?
