Big Boy to be Restored!

Union Pacific Railroad has reacquired the Big Boy 4-8-8-4 steam locomotive UP 4014 in Pomona, California and will take it to their steam shop in Cheyenne, Wyoming to restore it to operation.

That is awesome having been to Steamtown in Scranton, PA and always wanting to see the one out front in operation.

It would also be nice if Steamtown could go through the trouble of at least reinstalling the Piston connecting rods which they removed to tow those engines from New England to Scranton.

I see they are going to convert her to an oil-burner, like they did to Challenger 3985. It would have been neat to see her as a coal-burner.

Neat that is, until one got a cinder in the eye.....

I believe that by UP's own rules, they won't allow coal burning on their routes any more. It burns too dirty & too much work to operate. I'm excited to see it slated for restoration!
