I ended up staying at the Cambria Hotels Boston Downtown-Seaport, mainly because it was about a mile walk from South Station, and right across the street from the Red Line Broadway station. Basic accommodations, but clean and adequate. It's in a mostly industrial area, but I didn't feel unsafe. There were several restaurants within a block or two on Broadway. There's a large Whole Foods about a half mile away, where I went a couple of times to use the salad/hot bar and gather breakfast provisions. A large below-grade MBTA trainyard is across the street from the front of the hotel; my room faced the other way, but some higher floor rooms might have a view of it.

In June, I got rooms at AARP rate around $200. Looks like they're rising to $300 and more in the fall.
