Last year when I was in Boston the green line always seemed very crowded. Many times standing room only. Is this typical or was it something unusual when I was there. I was there last June and Saturday was the worse, Sunday morning was the best, the rest of the time was full but you didn't need to jam in.

It's highly variable, but in my experience the Green Line is at its most crowded in the central downtown subway area (North Station to about Kenmore) during rush hour, sporting events, or in general during "tourist season" in the summer. You probably had a crowded experience on a Saturday because there is sparser service on the weekends, resulting in more riders per car if things get at all busy. The B Line is also quite crowded with students on weekend evenings, in my experience.

I tend to avoid the Green lines if at all possible for my travels, simply because they are often packed to the gills. Yes, there are many trips where I have no choice. But if I can avoid Green, I do.

For example, the Green line runs right in front, although underground at that point, of the Boston Symphony. Yet, I'll walk one block up Mass Avenue to the Orange line simply to avoid the Green line which just gets packed in.
