I found this video by Geoff Marshall interesting. He looked at several bus operations in the UK which have been growing in popularity. In all cases it seems a management that is taking a positive approach and trying to improve service through better frequencies (so people can just turn up and go), better equipment and in some cases exclusive lanes to speed up operation.

Britain's Buses at their Best

This was one of his best videos imo. Great showcase of the simple but invaluable steps agencies can take to improve bus service and make it attractive. The bus depots shown were of very high quality. Far from common here in the US even among major cities, where bus ridership is a similar ratio to rail.

True, what is remarkable here is that most of the examples shown are not big cities or even second tier cities, but essentially mid-sized towns in which buses do not typically have any natural advantage. Places such as Brighton and Bournemouth are typically associated with more affluent residents, who again would not typically be the core of any bus service. This makes the successes depicted all the more remarkable.
