Goin' to L.A. so it's 7-7-4, a Surfliner

Business Class or Coach plus Cafe it don't get much finer

Go to book online there's a Service Alert

Evil Empire of UP is performing track work

You wanna ride a train but you can't even try

It's gonna be a bus so you book and print then just sit and cry

Bustitute

Aboard Amtrak

The bus driver drives like he's been smokin' crack

You count yourself lucky he's not drivin' you back

Bustitute

Freeways majorly bite

Sat up front, spent the trip with my heart in my mouth

Oxnard to L.A.'s really east but the signs say you're goin' south

In the San Fernando Valley smell the nice brown air

Glad I live on the coast, not in the zoo down there

The 101 is jammed almost everywhere

Keeps the driver goin' slow, so I don't really care, really care

Bustitute

Could use a drink

Gonna need a shrink

I'm out of luck

Don't hit that car, driver, what the f***

It's a bustitute don't even ask why

You can't question Julie, she'll just tell you to die

Those automated systems are all complicated

To a bustitute you've been relegated, yeah

Penned mostly during the ordeal as a distraction from the prospect of an imminent motor coach demise.

Apologies to Pete Townshend and The Who.

For those who would like to sing along but are unfamiliar with the original song:

Coming Soon: Bustitute, the photos.

NOTE: Bustitutes (4 in all for 774 on 2-27-09) were charter hires, not Amtrak Thruway equipment or drivers.

We're expecting you to bring a guitar to Boston so that you can perform this for us at the Gathering.

Though we'll have to figure out where you can reasonably play. The T doesn't really like people who haven't paid them for a permit to play in the subway, and I think their permit procedures may be unworkable for out of town visitors. Cambridge is also potentially grumpy about people performing without a permit in public places in Cambridge, though I've seen someone talk several years ago about how he tried to get himself arrsested so he could play test case for the ACLU, and the Cambridge Police didn't bite. Davis Square in Somerville in the paved over ``park'' space above the subway platform is probably safe with no permit, though, if we wanted to head out there, and J P Licks also makes ice cream available right along that ``park''. I think within the Boston city limits in public places off MBTA property might also be safe, but I'm not sure I can think of any places where I've ever run into buskers there.

Three chances of me lugging a guitar around for a month in order to grace the AU heathens with a rock and roll Mass: Slim, fat, and no.

However if a local guitar just happens to find its way into my hands, that's another deal entirely.

Bostitute

You think you row pretty good on the Charles

You think good music comes from Barkley, Gnarls

You're a Bostitute under leaden sky

State troopers dress like ****s but you don't ask why

A simpleton whooz theories are now all negated

Clap you in stocks to be publicly berated, yeah

Edit: CHOWDAH!!

Wow, good way to take a terrible situation and turn it into a poem. I saw the thread and I was like he really wrote out an entire report about being stuck on a bus. That takes talent lol. Good adaptation though.

Main reason for going to L.A. was to get together with Alice to put finishing touches on travel plans surrounding and including the Amtrak Unlimited Third Annual Gathering. We did other things too, starting with a visit to The Nethercutt Collection.
Aloha

Mahalo for sharing, a help when flash is not allowed is to increase the "iso" setting of the camera. Some times there may be too much "noise" in the picture, but at least you may get something useable. My camera's limit is 1600. I saw another, newer one with 3200 that made night look like day, with very little noise, which sort of looks like the grain of film when pushed.

The Nikon D3 goes up to 25600 ISO, a chum of mine has one and you can take shots on the London Underground without even thinking of using flash. Mind you, it will cost you about $5000!
