(although I wonder why anyone would want to live in Rhode Island, my neighborhood is bigger! )
Classic Texan - Bigger is Better

Remember, its not the size of the hammer the carpenter swings, its the skill with which he swings it!! ;) :)

So true, another saying is "It's a poor workman that blames his tools!" Bigger is not always better, Too Big to Fail is what got us in this mess were in!

Quality not quanity is a good philosophy to live by, wish more people remembered that! Since youre from the STL area have to say I really like it there, looking forward to the gathering, have many fond memories of that City! Like your loophole trips also! ;)

Well I did it! Just booked the CHI - EMY trip on the Zephyr. I was booked into room 002 on car 531. Should I assume this is room "2" at the top of the stairs on the FOA room layout? I am so excited!
I'm still working out the details on getting to CHI. I may get there via PVD, RTE, or NWK so I can visit family "on my way" to California.
Congrats, a great route! You are correct, Room #2 is across the hall from the SCA (#1), next to the stairs, coffee/juice etc. A good room IMO, hope you got low bucket prices, this is a popular train! ;) (although I wonder why anyone would want to live in Rhode Island, my neighborhood is bigger! )
Bigger isn't always better

And as a recent RI transplant (just moved there from Mass about 5 months ago), I really dig RI!! It is cheap, cheap, cheap compared to Boston, but you can still work in Boston and get Boston salaries!

It was a joke folks, nothing wrong with RI (except they let the_traveler stay there between trips! )!Sounds smart to me to get out of Tax-a-chusetts, I did the same when I lived in VA., worked in expensive and poorly run WAS! :D ;)

Well, I'm in St Louis now but I was born and raised in NYC then I went to school in Boston. Talk about expensive!!

While the Rockies and Sierras are great, I think an overlooked scenic feature of the CZ is the Wasatch Range, which you wanna see on the eastbound. Some of the finest mountain railroading around, and not generally viewable westbound.

1. Eastbound is definitely the best, descending the front range in the dark into Denver happens far too often westbound.
I think you mean just the opposite do you not, the dark comes on the eastbound when it is late, the westbound arrives in the morning! ;)
In my opinion, descending the front range in the dark into Denver is the second most spectacular Amtrak sight, after climbing the triple horseshoe westbound up the front range in daylight.

As a Californian looking east, I consider Denver to be on the BACK range of the Rockies. To me the front range is the western side. But I agree that the descent to Denver in the dark is pretty spectacular.

Thanks for that inspiration Whooz,i was built up by konrad when he said eastbound is best just to have my hopes dashed when I read his OOPS post. You see my wife and I will be taking the east bound Zephyr in about three weeks EMY- CHI,so I was glad to see this post come up. I'm sure we will still enjoy the trip. Now I just have a good reason to take another trip later :D On the WB Zephyr. Oh BTW Whooz I've really enjoyed your railpics and videos, great stuff keep it coming!! THANKS

The Wasatch Range is pretty nice. There should still be snow on them when you come through. The temps have been warming up (50 degrees yesterday)! It will be warmer but not hot in a few weeks. Then, heading east after Helper & Green River, the scenery changes again. Last October we saw some Deer & Antelope in between Helper & Green River. There are also vineyards on both sides of the train in that area. I was surprised to see them out there!

I just wish I could see the Gilluly (sp?) Loops in daylight!
