Hi,

Can we check in luggages at NY Penn Station to travel to Washington station on train 79 Carolinian? Does NY Penn Station allow passengers to check in luggages? We are concern as we read on the website that only select train stations handle check in luggages. Appreciate your reply. Thank you.

Yes 79 the Carolinian is one of the few trains that accepts checked luggage between New York and Washington.

Luggage needs to be checked 45 minutes in advance, don't go to the Amtrak ticket counter but the seperate baggage office on the south side of the (Upper Level Amtrak concourse) near the gates to tracks 5 and 6.

In fact, you can check baggage from NYP to WAS on any train you travel. The only thing is your bags will not travel on your train. You will need to return to the station to retrieve your bags.

To clarify what The Traveler means:

Most of the trains that run between Washington and New York do not have baggage cars. So while you can check bags between New York Penn and Washington (both have baggage service), if you travel on a train that does not have a baggage car, your bags won't go on your train. Which means you can't pick them up at baggage claim right away.

The Carolinian, however, does have checked baggage service and a baggage car. So you can ride on the same train as your bags.

But you're not required to check bags. You do have the option of carrying them on if you choose.

If your luggage is large, or you've got a couple of big pieces you should definitely check it in. The service is free, so why not use it? Additionally, when you board at New York you'll be able to roll right on the train with it. However, upon arrival in Washington on this train you'll have to go down about five steps to get off. There should be a Conductor there to assist you, but no guarantees on that. When in doubt, check it.
