Hi again,

Does anyone know if a soft-sided cooler (maybe 12" sq) is considered a carry-on? Thanks.

Don't worry about it - Amtrak is real casual about carryons. If you can carry it on, you can carry it on :D

I have a six-pack cooler that looks alot like a camera bag, I throw it over my shoulder & there's been nothing said. ( it has been known to give me an unexpected chill running down my side now & again!!!)  :D :p

The official rule is 2 carry-ons per passenger, but I have never strictly enforced! ;) If you can carry it without assistance, and it's not overly large (like 6' long or takes 3 people to carry it), it should be allowed!

Thanks to all for your replies. I was hoping it wouldn't count as a carry-on. Thanks for your help.

First post, here for another reason but this thread connects so well with my only train trip to date.

I boarded at Indy bound for Chicago and then to Osceola carrying an army surplus duffel with camping gear and of all things a 80 pound farm tractor part packed in the middle, it seemed that as long as I was willing to haul it they would allow it. I had not planned on doing this but it was a surprise gift, this was at least 6 years ago.

Trains without checked baggage the rules for carry-ons are even more lax (for obvious reasons). I've carried-on a vary large duffle bag (on end it is about 4-feet tall, and about 1.5 feet in diameter) on the Wolverine with no problems; as well as having my "normal" carry-ons.

I've had extremely large duffel bags (with wheels) on Acela, NE Regionals, SWC, EB, CL, Surfliners, The Card (before checked baggage was reinstated), and the CS. When I travel to RTE from PHL I always step off at NYP and take pictures of the Toaster or Banana, or in Acela's case power cars. My carry on's consist of: A laptop (which doesn't count towards the limit), a backpack, and a camera bag. Sometimes I need to carry two suitcases. IF checked baggage is available I will check the bags I DON'T need. I will have a set of sleepwear in my backpack if in a Roomette or Bedroom. When I took the SS from PHL to ORL and visa versa I had two suitcases. Both went through checked. I had a medium bag and a small bag. Sadly the small bag is so small that I have to bend over to roll it. I bend down about 2 feet and I'm 6 even. The only problem I had with checking the two bags was on the way down one of the legs broke. Amtrak had no part in that. It was broken before so I couldn't call Amtrak and say hey you broke my bag! When I returned and picked up my bags at PHL there was a odd green dust on the bags. Has no clue what from but that was my only complaint. The bottom line is, if you can check bags do it! You get 3 bags checked for free per person. After that they charge you, I forget how much but they do. I love checked baggage on Amtrak! Because it's FREE!
